We will get destroyed.
I know nobody wants to hear it, but just looking at how things are stacked up, we are likely to get slaughtered. We will need some great individual performances from some guys besides Scottie.
Euros are gonna throw something like Rory/Shane, Tommy/Rose, and some combo of Hovland, Rahm, Aberg, and Bobby McIntyre at us.
Nothing will come easy.

Maybe the USA will get destroyed, but too many people are looking at names rather than form this year. It feels similar to Rome in that the USA team had all the stars and confidence was high. Europe is very top heavy.
Rasmus auto-qualified and he's currently the 50th ranked player in the DG rankings
Straka was one of the top players the first half of the year, but he has fallen off lately. He finished DFL this past week
Lowry has 1 top 10 in his last 13 starts
Hovland has been a rollercoaster this season. He missed 4 cuts in a row before winning the Valspar. He had a T3 at the US Open, but the rest isn't all that impressive.
Again, it's certainly possible that they all find their form at the same time, but their names are certainly what is driving a lot of this fear.

Yet another person looking at names and not actual form.
We are the better team by any metric or reference point you wish to use. A lot better, as a matter of fact.
Given their form right now and the last two years, Hatton, Lowry, Rose, Hojgaard, and Straka likely wouldn't even get a sniff of making the American team (all are below our worst player in the Datagolf rankings, Morikawa at 26). 11 of the 12 Americans on the team are in the top 21 in the world right now in DG. Europe is about to leave off #10, #24, and #28 in favor of #38, #47, and #50. The U.S. has been accused - rightly so, in some instances - of being clubby and having players select friends to the detriment of actual form and quality; the European team, unless they surprise the shite out of me next week, will be doing exactly that but 3X worse.
The only guys that are coming in off a real tear on their side are Fleetwood and Rahm. Aberg has been playing pretty well, additionally. Otherwise, Rory has had an uneven back half of the year. Hovland has been wildly inconsistent. Fitzpatrick has had some good weeks here and there but again up and down and didn't even make the Tour Championship. Rose had a good stretch from the Open through Memphis but otherwise has been complete shite the rest of the summer. Lowry and Straka are not playing well. On and on.

This is the thing that we sometimes do, where we look at the negatives of our team while only looking at the positives of the Euros. If Lowry, Hovland, or Straka were Americans you would be complaining about them being picked for our team.

Well i guess we are gonna find out if all the datagolf stuff is the gospel.
You can say oh those are just big names. But they are big names because they have been elite golfers for a long time.
What Euros are we discounting? Hovland had an up and down year? He is an incredibly talented player. His resume is something like US Am, FedEx Cup, NCAA champ. And he was lights out last time out.
Justin Rose and Shane Lowry are legendary and proven. You better believe Rose is gonna be insanely hot with the putter and Lowry will be a wizard with his wedge.
Hatton is another guy who will thrive in this setup. Straka got cold at the end of the year. But he had a really solid year. He is a big strong dude who can get hot, but he is like 11 or 12th man for them.
1 through 12 they have more talent than us. I dont care what datagolf says.

Well if you don’t care what the data says then I guess this is where we are gonna end. You’re using home Ryder Cup stuff for Europe, but not the US which doesn’t seem entirely fair.
Hovland has all that stuff, but Morikawa has two majors and somehow doesn’t get the benefit of the doubt from you.
Obviously all the stuff you’re saying could happen, but it feels like you’re looking at this from a pretty one-sided lens.

Straka is below tour average in driver distance. Just an example of the eye and the data not lining up.

Hovland is better than Morikawa. Always has been.

If Rose and Lowry are legendary and proven, what does that make Thomas, Morikawa, Xander, Bryson et al? Our guys have more majors, more wins, more top 10s in majors, on and on. Which side has more cumulative majors? More cumulative worldwide professional wins? PGA Tour wins? It's ours and it isn't even particularly close. The U.S. also has the best player in the world and likely the best player since Tiger.

Yeah, I will give him Rose. He is a major winner, has a great Ryder Cup record, and has had some big moments this season. He is 45 years old, though. However, you pointing out Lowry is spot on. How is Lowry considered legendary? He does have his major, but he has a 2-3-1 Ryder Cup record. His professional career has been fine, but far from legendary. I know the whole point of the argument is to ignore data, but DG has a nice Career Points stat that compares careers. Lowry is at 117; a little above Charlie Hoffman and a little below Billy Horschel.

I will concede that Lowry's "legend" is very much bolstered by his win at The Open. He is certainly a legend in Ireland, but in the grand scheme not so much. Still a damn good wedge player and he has good chemistry with Rory. They won the Zurich a couple years ago. Lowry will be comfortable doing what he is asked to do. But he is probably somewhere around the 10-11th guy for them.

We had Speith and Koepka last time and all those major trophies didnt help at all.

I think that is the main argument I am making. At a certain point, the Euros will start getting close to the top if you line up the guys not playing well as back end guys.
12. Rasmus (somehow auto-qualified)
11. Lowry
10. Straka
9. Hatton (26th best golfer on LIV this year)
8. Rose (could certainly be amazing, or could land in one of those weeks where his age shows)
6 and 7. Bobby Mac and Fitz. I don't know if they scare me all that much, but both have been hot to finish the year (especially Mac).
4 and 5. Aberg and Hovland. Brand names. Could be world beaters. However, I would think both would admit they had disappointing seasons.
The rest (Rahm, Fleetwood, and Rory) I would take over anyone on the USA not named Scottie.
Posted on 8/29/25 at 10:41 am to DestrehanTiger
Just to play devils advocate (and I'd be curious to see how you rank the US to compare direct)...
If you go just on sheer ranking, I don't know if anyone would take current Morikawa over Rose. He literally just won the FedEx. I think his age is a bit of a lame excuse because as of right now, he's not showing his age an Morikawa hasn't won since the 22/23 ZO ZO Championship
Plus he's obviously a good Ryder Cup player.
Outside of Scottie, Rahm, and Fleetwood, I'm not sure there's anybody playing better than MaCintyre. To have him as your 6th man shows you're incredibly deep. Agrred that Fitz isn't a strong #7.
I would certainly disagree with Hovland. Guy hadn't won since 22/23 and it looked for a while like he had completely lost his swing and was going to fall of the map. He had a nice rebound year.
Compare two guys you have at 4 and 5 to our 3 in Xander. I think it's safe to say, for his expectations, his year was the definition of meh.

I just don't waste any brain time with predictions. Ryder Cup may be the least predictable sporting event I have ever paid attention to. Great players have down days. Players who miss cuts suddenly win. Then there's horses for courses, weather etc.
Posted on 8/29/25 at 11:53 am to iwyLSUiwy
I’d pick Hovland based on current form, but it would be close. I just didn’t understand why all those benefits of the doubt applied to Hovland but not Morikawa.

Hovland lost his game and found it again. Morikawa hasnt even found a caddie.
Plus Hovland's performance last time we played is still fresh in memory. He was an A player for their squad, from what i remember.

Stats - Morikawa. Better tee to green and putting is almost identical. 1.745 to 1.742
Ryder cup history
Hovland - 3-4-3
Morikawa - 4-3-1
Basically a wash. I’d probably take Hovland because he has better history across multiple partners and gives my team more flexibility.
Which is basically me saying you pick someone because “they’re hot” is pretty silly given the layoff till the RC starts.
It’s not like it’s a big gulf between the 2, basically a coin toss.
Posted on 8/29/25 at 3:28 pm to SECSolomonGrundy
Hovland was literally on the most ridiculous heater of his life in 2023 leading up to the RC. And one of the more memorable runs from anyone on the PGA Tour in recent memory outside of Scottie.
He’s a fine player but he hasn’t touched that level in 2 years.
Again, not having Ricky, Spieth and Koepka is going to make a huge difference.
No chance Scottie goes 0fer again either.
