I have been using a set of P770 irons for the last few years. I went to them thinking they were easier to hit, might give me a bit more distance and all the tech would help me play better. In reality it was hard to control distance, and shots that were offline. Took my old MP-5s to the range yesterday and played 9 this morning. Hit my irons the best I have in two years. I think the wider soles and bounce on the P770 as well as offset were the problem. On the course I found the MP-5s went further than the P770s. Yes, I was fitted for both sets. 2 handicap.

Play what fits you best. I’m not a great ball striker by any stretch of the phrase. I wish I could play blades though. They’re gorgeous and feel amazing when you stripe one.

I like the way blades look at address, so there is some comfortability there.

I think that the players distance iron category of clubs in general are more for 8-10 handicaps. I was pretty much pin high or just a bit short today with my blades. With the P770 I could catch some balls that basically behaved like jumpers

I hit thinner soled irons dramatically better too, though I still stick with a forged cavity back for more forgiveness. There are a clubs that play like a blade but give some forgiveness. Mizuno tour 923, Titleist 620cb or T100, TM P7 MC, Cobra CB immediately to mind. ZX7 is more similar to p770 in size.

If iron play is a strength of your game as a 2 then blades should be fine though. If they are a weakness then you might want to look at those options.

Aren't the P770's players irons? The P790's are players distance. PD I believe are for mid handicaps.

The 770s aren’t players distance irons nor are they a players iron. It fits into more of a Player Performance iron. Golf is weird and there is a thing where the phrase “aim small miss small” is true and why amateurs can play blades and hit them well. I play a blade in the scoring irons. I play one piece forged cavity backs in my mid to long irons.

I don’t think the OP is complaining more about the size as he is the distance control which is common with foam filled irons. Which the 770 is foam filled and adds ball speed. Could be a lot of reasons you’re hitting the blades better than the 770s but hey, haven’t a 2nd set is always fun.

Directly from the My Golf Spy review ….

TaylorMade P-770 Iron places 8th overall in our best player's distance irons

Yep the size of the heads are fine but the wider soles and offset are the problem. Turf interaction is not as good for my swing when compared to,the MP-5

Weird because golf digest has the P770's as players and P790's as PD.

Yeah, I’m going off of what true fitters will tell you. They don’t really consider the 770 as more of a players distance. They have that 770 all over the board and some consider it a players iron but it isn’t that either. That’s kinda beside the point though considering what your issues are. 770 and a blade are highly different so i find it a bit odd you were fit into both of them. The lofts off that 770 are stronger, the CG is different so your spin is gonna be highly different. Could be a variety of reasons that blade is better for you but I’d def say turf interaction is one.

2 handicap.

You need a worse swing to become an elite net player.

Surely you can sway off the ball and come over the top after casting the club.

C’mon, you could be a 10 in no time.

Seriously, a 2 handicap can make a lot of clubs move properly. Sounds like your fitter may have put you in some suboptimal sticks for your ability.

You probably can hit a 1 iron.

I can’t even generate enough speed for a 4 iron.

So many head covers.

One of my favorite iron sets of all time was my Mizuno MP-14's. They looked like a butter knife on a stick.

While I couldn't play well with them now since I don't pound range balls any more, they were awesome back then.

I've been testing different irons a couple of times this past week.

Some have surprise me and some disappointed.

I just switched to Mizuno pro 225s, I really hit them well. I prefer the smaller iron head at address. It's not a blade, but I prefer it to a cavity back with a wide sole
