I need some help. I have an incredibly bad case of the shanks, and I can not get rid of them. I used to be a decent golfer 6-8 handicap and now I probably couldn't break 120.

Anyone had experience with this or have any tips to correct. I have taken lessons and they aren't helping.

Golf is pretty much my only hobby, and I am very close to quitting.

A few weeks away from the game could be helpful. You have got to be doing something very wrong. Ball position? Try hitting punch shots at 70% until you are making solid square contact.

Have you tinkered with ball placement? Ball forward an inch, ball back an inch, closer/further.

You trying to over power the swing?

They come & go, you will never completely rid yourself of them. I find, when they do show up, it is usually caused by being too far from the ball at address.

What works for me, is setting up a little closer to the ball, and addressing the ball slightly towards the toe of the club.

The only thing I knw I consistently do it completely flatten out in my backswing, break my hands and the shaft of the club almost becomes parallel with the ground,

It has become muscle memory and literally cannot stop myself from doing it.

I have tinkered with ball position, and over swinging does become an issue at times. I play with a few gorillas who consistently hit driver 300+.

I'm very close to being done with it, and I don't want to be.

I struggle with this and I’m currently a 1.5 at my club.

For me, it had to do a little with balance but mainly its my left hand that causes my shank. Try to keep your left knuckles “down” (for a righty) throughout the backswing. It will feel like a hook, but it should go straight.

I feel your pain. Broke 3 clubs over the last couple of months because of this. Brings me to my knees.

Go to a pro that has a trackman. They can literally give you every detail of your club at impact.

Your head is sliding forward laterally before impact. Period. Go hit some balls focusing on keeping your head behind the ball through impact and report back. You’re Welcome.

Any good teacher will first say that your irons are too long. I've seen, multiple times, when you take an inch or so off the length, the shanks disappear.

Try to hook the ball a hundred yards by closing the face and swinging from in to out.

After you’ve hit it left a few times maybe you can hit it straight.

I did previously.

Are you humping the goat? That's the underlying cause for a lot of people. Don't hump the goat and you shouldn't shank it.

sounds like you're coming too far in to out. pretend you have a hammer in your hand at the top of the backswing and you want to hit the ball with it... does your current top of backswing allow you to hit it as hard as you can without rerouting the hammer?

make sure you get a full shoulder turn and stability up top before you plant and swing at it.

If you took lessons, and the "pro" couldn't eliminate them you need to demand a refund. When I had them, I took a week off and resumed adjusting my ball position until thy disappeared.

If you're right handed, are you dropping you right shoulder?

That's what gives me the shanks. I generally only shank on 60% or less swings. I don't shank full swings.

But the lighter swings sometimes make me have a "lazy swing". I drop my shoulder and not square the face.

I remember a few years ago on a short par 3. I shanked the tee shot. Then to try and fix it, I reteed. I proceeded to shank about 8 balls pretty much the exact same way. At that moment, it was impossible for me to hit a straight, decent ball. It's a head game.

It was me, my son, and FIL on an empty course.

Did you pull a muscle lately? Stretch your hips, groin, and piriformis. Make sure you are getting optimal hip rotation.
