SPINOFF: Why Is Anchoring Putter to Chest Illegal?
Posted by Downtown Devin Brown on 4/14/21 at 6:17 pm12
Is there a valid reason this should be illegal? It is not like you're using a foreign object to assist your stroke. Putting was once about flicking wrists, then transformed to locking arms and putting like a pendulum. How is this natural improvement in putting style different?

Because you aren’t swinging the club freely and anchoring to your chests allows the club to swing as a pendulum.

I tried the long putter once, I couldn't hit a barn with it.
Langer was a master with it and Adam Scott was ok with it.
That European player Tim Scott? Career ended when it was banned.
I never saw it as much of an advantage to me.

I’d say just like anything it takes a lot of practice to be a good anchored or not. I do think anchoring the putter takes some of the skill out. Think it makes it more consistent. Webb Simpson went from a top putter on tour to one of the worst when they banned it. He’s worked hard and back to good stats but thought that was interesting.

Because people that use broomsticks look like douchebags. That’s enough reason for me. I hate watching Adam Scott for this very reason (although he doesn’t anchor anymore, he still uses the long putter).

The full broomstick was way worse than the belly putter. That shouldn’t have been banned imho

I sort of agree with the OP. Still don't understand the outrage.
It has never felt comfortable to me. Long putter seems like it waves around on the takeaway. And I couldn't even figure out how the belly putter worked.
Seems like it would take a shite ton of practice to putt as well as I do with my standard putter. And I'm not even a good putter (in part because I don't practice).

I used a belly putter, and it didn’t immediately turn me in to Ben Crenshaw. It was banned because the USGA and R&A didn’t like that there were multiple majors won with the method, and more kids were coming up using anchored methods.
The dumbest part of the anchoring ban was leaving armlock as legal because “it’s not anchored to a fixed point”

Why?
No real reason. It's just what the "powers that be" decided.
There was a point in time during the 80s or 90s when the first "metal head" drivers and graphite shafts came along that many of the older players wanted them banned. As I recall, I believe Nicklaus was behind that movement. Part of the rationale was that there was a reason why they called them "Woods" and the old timers wanted to keep to the persimmons woods.
Many even said that it would ruin the game. With what we've seen over the last 2 decades some would argue that they turned out to be right.
I think what saved the "metal heads" (now graphite, tungsten, and titanium) drivers were the manufacturers realizing how much money they could make. Nicklaus owned a chunk of MacGregor and even he came around. However, MacGregor never really made a big splash in the industry.
ETA: To the youngsters, if you've never swung a finely crafted persimmon wood and you can still find one that is in fairly new condition, try it out. There is a smoothness and feel about it that graphite and titanium just can't match. While it's true that you don't get the distance, if you can find a really good persimmon the feel is just incredible.

These are my thoughts as well. Looks like Kisner is trying this out this weekend.

Didn't Arnold Palmer do this back in his day? I think they didn't want to cast any shadow on him.
