Does that really work? I have never heard of that until reading the thread below. I wonder how many times I’ve played with someone who was doing this.

The More You Know.

Produces a strange ball flight. Almost like a knuckleball, so you would probably be able to tell. My dad and I were paired with a guy down at the beach who was doing it. Pretty awkward.

What is it supposed to do?

Take spin off of the ball to produce a straighter ball flight.

Keeps the ball from getting marred when it hits the cart path.

Can’t rmember who did it, but there is an article where someone tested this. Was either golfwrx or mygolfspy I think. Said it doesn’t make a noticeable difference. Spin on the launch monitor was only lower by like 100 rpms or so.

ETA; it was The Fried Egg and there is a YouTube video.

It's still straight up cheating.

Weird. I always heard it was good for at least 10yds of distance. Never tried it though. I hit the ball far enough as it is.

First time I heard about this was an old comedy called “Dead Solid Perfect” where an old guy wanted to bet a pro but one of the conditions was that the old guy got to grease his driver in an attempt to even thing out a bit .

Putting Vaseline on the driver face does decrease spin and helps the ball go straighter but it actually decreases distance for someone who normally hits the driver straight and with optimal spin. The ball needs spin to stay in the air, but someone who hits a big slice and creates too much spin will see distance increase by greasing the driver face since the ball will go straighter and reduce spin to normalish levels

Not all spin is bad spin. You can't shape shots without it and knuckleballs will fall out of the air. That being said, most Ams need less of it.

Exactly. If you're fit right, this could actually hurt.

Side spin-sure, but low spin drivers hurt low speed players on distance.

I don't think players who normally hit it straight with optimal spin are the one's greasing their drivers

It only makes a difference on a slice? Shouldn’t it have the same effect for a hook also?

Asking for a friend. Lol
