We are having our 4th annual LSU Alumni Golf Tournament tomorrow. Scores in these scrambles are always frustrating. You pick up after par for pace of play. Last year the winning scores were: -20, -18, -17, -17, and then my team at -16 for 5th.

I know you can't judge a book by it's cover, but if that winning teams score was 20 under, I'm Tiger Woods.
What is your target score in a scramble?
Aiming for -18 tomorrow.

How many gimmick holes and mulligans are there?

-20 is not unreasonable for a team that compliments each other well, particularly if one of the players is long off the tee.

You’ll lose by 5 to a team of slapdick retards that play by their own rules.

2 mulligans each, if you purchase them.
I guess you are correct. A good "team" could go very low. Just, they did not "look" like they knew a putter from a rake. My team has a 7 (great short game), 8 (solid irons), 10 (big hitter) and 12 (bigger hitter) handicap players. Decent golfers.

I have been on a winning team that was -22, at BAY HILL no less. I was the "C" player and I play to an 8. Our "A" player was a stud (former college golfer).

Yes, I'm a competitive sore loser.

Came in second at a 4 man scramble a few weekends ago with a -13.

Winning team was like 21 under and we probably had the two best golfers of the 8. One of the guys on the other team is "driving it 320" now though

Really depends on the gimmicks. Especially those which are true sole purpose fundraiser Scrambles. No gimmicks 16-18 should always put you in the running. We finished legit -18 recently and didn’t buy all the gimmicks and weren’t in the top 8, I the worse in the group as a 12. They had more ridiculous gimmicks at this one than I have ever seen.

12-15 is excellent score with typical ABCD players .

Noticed out of your group none with putting as the strength.

Fund raising tournaments usually have a lots of gimmicks. Mulligans, advance a tee box, string, etc.

Just need to relax and enjoy friends and golf. Too competitive.

Short game guy is a wiz with wedges and putter. Best green reader that I have played with. THAT is worth a couple of strokes by itself.

Also depends on the course & setup. I’ve seen courses put the pin in some really stupid locations for a big scramble.

Won a four man scramble about five years ago. Had a guy on the team that refused to lose no matter what and by that I mean he controlled the pencil and the scorecard. Take it FWIW, but we won by 2 strokes.

And none of the other 3 players had the character or balls to tell him “no”?

Have an observer on every par 5. Have them watch each team play the hole, counting the shots, then have then acknowledge what they made on the hole, having the observer record a score for each team on the hole. Also, do not have the scores posted publicly until they are all in

I play in a few tournaments a year with my dad and his buddies. He has a buddy that hits it about 280 off the tee and in the fairway, and he is 70 and plays from the senior tees. That puts us way out there on every hole. I am a good wedge player and short iron player. My dad can't play much anymore but his other buddy is a good player overall.

Played in a scramble in Jackson MS one time and the group in front of us was hitting the ball all over the course and holding up the other groups. The group behind us had 2 Mississippi State golfers and had to wait for us to get off of the greens on short par 4 before they would hit. One or both would drive the green easy. We shot a honest -8, the group behind us shot -18, and the group if front of us shot -22. When they announced the winners, you could hear a pin drop. Oh and it rained on the last 9.
