Ratings for the Showdown absolutely tank

When are people going to realize golf isn’t a money maker? Besides the top tournaments nobody is ever going to care
Tiger is the only thing that has made people on a macro level ever care about golf. Ever. Pretending golf has an actual market to tap into is so strange and it’s amazing people are wasting billions to try and find it

TNT and TBS is part of the problem. I didn’t even know about this.

I’m a big golf fan, I knew about this 6 months ago and then didn’t hear about it again until this week. That and it being at 6 on a weekday had to affect viewership

I didn’t know about this until I saw the add on x the day before.

Golfers are nerds and don’t do the smack talk very well. Even Tiger. It’s pretty cringy.
Also, there wasn’t a whole lot of promotion prior to this event.
Most Americans (outside of serious sports fans) don’t know who these people are.

It’s because the PGA Tour didn’t want to promote it. Rory had to convince them to let them do it in the first place

I also think following one foursome is boring.
A normal tournament there is tons of action going on at all times up until the very end of the day. The showdown was Tee shot, commercial, approach shots, commercial, putting, commercial....
Also there is something to be said about having a live crowd. It's even more weird to watch a foursome play a round of golf and really the only other people out there are cameramen and production crew. It's not nearly as compelling or interesting as a normal tourney with a large gallery.
There are tons of incredibly awesome games/matches/etc that wouldn't have been remotely as entertaining if they were played in an empty stadium. Change nothing at all about the on field performance, but it loses a lot having zero live fans.

Doing an event like this live is a problem. It’s going to be loaded with filler, and frankly pros play a different game than everyone else.
By that I mean when we’re on the green we’re probably talking with our buddies. Bets are likely made about whether you make that 4 footer or not. In short, it’s a relaxed atmosphere generally. Pros talk to their caddies and rarely anyone else. They are not relaxed on a golf course, that’s their job.
Where you can change that for something like this is take a page from the YouTube creators. They edit for content to make it more interesting with commentary. You don’t get awkward silence or forced conversation. Bad commentary just gets edited out.
The only pro I’ve seen who really gets into that kind of format is Bryson. Dude Perfect at Augusta National with him is great.

I personally don’t care for Rory, or Bruce(or whatever his name is). But, I do like Scottie & Bryson. The cold temperatures, and the fact that it was played at night further turned me off…

Wrong format. Should have been on YouTube. These matches are overproduced.

Younger generation will not be able to afford golf and the covid golf bubble has busted.
Takes a person with a long attention span to watch golf and the next few generations have an attention span of like 5 seconds.
Just what I think and I have no data to back it up.

Tee sheet is always jammed at my club.
Rounds played are still up.
I’ve been waiting for the big quit, but I have not seen it yet.

That’s true and same here. I guess I should have said it’s on the decline rather than busted. The ratings are the beginning.
This next generation does stuff that is cool and golf won’t be cool to them when all the tweets and Instagram post are copied over and over.
I feel like that’s why LIV started and are trying to catch the next generation. They like fun flashy, loud music and quick action.
At the end of the day I love golf but to a someone that is not a fan and doesn’t have any understanding of the game and skill it takes it won’t be popular.

They did a terrible job of advertising.
A lot of people didn’t even know it was happening. Especially the casual golf fan.
