Ranking DIFFICULTY of Baton Rouge public courses

Spin-off from previous thread… I would be interested in opinions on the difficulty of area public/semi-public courses. I’ll go first:
1. Greystone (shorter but narrow)
2. Carter (hard to hold the greens)
3. Santa Maria ( plays long when wet)
4. Beaver ( sub-300 Par 4s?)
5. Coppermill
This may change soon as I am playing The Island Friday.
Of course, CCL and UClub would top this list, but let’s stay with public and semi-private.

Thought about it, but I don’t find the lay out particularly difficult

Carter is the top of my list. There aren't a ton of makeable putts on those greens. There aren't very many easy birdie holes. It just isn't an easy golf course to score on. Can only get home on 1/4 par 5s and it isn't an easy green to hit eith a hybrid or long iron.
The rest of them in the area are basically a toss up. I'd probably put Greystone second because of how unreasonably tight the golf course is in spots and the fact that you can't get home on 3/4 of the par 5s. Par 3s actually play decently long and inability to pull driver makes the rest of the course play longer.
Santa Maria/ Copper Mill/ The Island/ Pelican Pointe all tie. They each have hard holes. They each have easy holes. If you play smart, you can manage your way around those golf courses.
Beaver is probably the easiest of the bunch. Fairly open. Can get home on 2/4 par 5s. Some shortish par 4s that are driver wedge. Can't really get into trouble unless you hit a really bad shot. Greens roll well and have a lot of makeable putts.
Not included: Webb, City Park, Dumas, LSU. Those aren't really the same thing as the others. Webb is easy, but the greens are small and that can make it tough.

I would just switch Beaver and Coppermill.
I thought Beaver's front was one of the easiest 9 holes I've ever played

For some reason, I always get off to a rough start at Santa Maria.
- 1st hole is longer than it appears and you're usually hitting off of a downhill/sidehill lie to a smaller angled green that's awkward for a right-hander.
- 2nd hole is just a long par 3 that I'm usually not warmed up for at this point.
- 3rd and 4th holes shouldn't be super difficult but I always seem to muck them up somehow, probably just by being too aggressive.
- and finally, the 5th hole is that 200 yd par 3 to a skinny green with water on both sides that is the straw that breaks the camels back for any hope of a personal best that day.
The rest of the course is pretty manageable, but it sucks to get off to a bad start.

I’d drop The Island just above SM. SM is long but hard to go south quickly on. The Island has 5-7 holes that can destroy your round with a swiftness.
I’d also put Carter at 1. Greystone might be narrow, but the course layout is such that driver really only benefits you on a few holes anyway. Can go utility or fw on most tee boxes and mitigate the narrowness.
Beaver goes below CM. Pelican goes above CM
For non-public
U-Club would rank hardest due to surrounds alone. CCL is a good mix but not “hard.” Round can still go south quick on a few holes.
Never played BRCC.

Pretty good list imo.
Greystone being narrow and forcing longer second shots due to forced layups puts it up there. But I promise if you can score at that course, your game will travel. I have a love/hate relationship with it because of that.
The Island can be really tough when the wind picks up.
Beaver is by far the easiest although the 12-14 stretch is one of the tougher 3 hole stretches of all the courses.
Carter has faster/tougher greens but some players love that me included. The par 5s are long but there’s almost no trouble off the tee except for the easiest of the four.
Santa Maria is boring and easy. Just above Beaver.
Pelican is interesting. I always enjoy it there and has been the most consistent in terms of conditions. It’s middle of the pack.
Copper is weird. With no warmup possible it’s tough to feel very good those first few holes even though they’re extremely easy and should be scoring holes. But it’s fun to have so many par 5s and par 3s. I don’t think it makes it easier. Just very different.

I'd go:
1. Carter (plays pretty firm and fast for a non links course). Some tough approaches on this course.
2. Island (holes 10 - 12 might be the toughest stretch in the area)
3. Santa Maria (tons of water and trouble lurks out there along with houses and OB). Never played well here for some reason.
4. Greystone (tight and bunch of forced lay-ups)
5. Beaver (Mainly for the already mentioned 12 - 14 stretch, 14 is one of the worst par 4's I've ever played)

How y’all trying to play 14 @ beaver?
3/4 driver swing down the middle will give you about 150 - 165 in depending on your tees.
That next par 3 gives me fits though.

This swing is a guaranteed way to have me pull the frick out of the golf ball and destroy my whole swing.
In fact you just typing this sentence on this board added 3 strokes to my next 5 rounds

Full driver at the electrical box with a cut.

I hate that hole, fade is not my reg shot so if I hit too much and it doesn’t fade I’m screwed.

My bad, baw. I choke all the down on my driver and do my best senior swing imitation and 9 times out of 10, it funnels off the hill by the cart path to the edge of the shite. Leaves about 150 from center green

1. Greystone-I hate holes 4, 10, 11, & 12.
2. The Island-Same as Greystone but add #2 remove #4.
3. Webble Beach-Oh $hit corner always get me (#'s 14, 15, &16).
4. City Park-Not smart enough to hit irons on #2 & #3.
5. Santa Maria-Only because I put 2 balls in the water on #5 yesterday but also eagled #9 from 180 yards out after dribbling ball off of tee box.
6. Beaver-Hole #'s 12, 13, & 14.
7. Coppermill-Hole #'s 10, 12, 12, & 14.

Beaver 12-15 for me gets me almost every time.
#12-Its short but you have to be straight as an arrow on the tee shot.
#13-Sometimes driving it through that canopy can be tricky. Then on your second shot you have to avoid the trees of death on the left.
#14-I sometimes go 5 wood/5 wood and then other times do a 3/4 driver fade/7 iron. Still haven't figure out what is best for me. Usually par feels like birdie and bogey feels like par.
#15-Long par three with water on the left and woods on the right and you have to carry at least 150 ish to get across the muck.
