I’m playing in a flighted 4-Ball tournament the next couple days and was surprised to learn we are playing to GROSS not NET.

Asked a friend and he said he had never played in one that played to NET. I’m thinking I’ve never played in one that played to GROSS.

What has been your experience? Do you normally play to NET or GROSS?

Any 4 ball or best ball tourney I have played in has been net but with my handicap, I would likely avoid a gross tourney so my experience would likely be skewed.

If I was a < 5, I'd probably play more gross.

It seems like net wouldn't really make sense if you are going to take the time to organize flights. You're grouped with golfers with similar handicaps. If you're going to use handicaps, you might as well have everyone grouped together, right?

Once you are flighted, it’s gross.

I suppose you are right…. I guess what stood out to me was a huge disparity in my flight. Not many mid-handicaps playing so we are giving up a good bit of strokes.

Oh well, it’s golf. I’ll enjoy the day and appreciate the experience

I’ve played both. My league does a net one every year. Most of the invitationals are flighted by net, but then gross within the flights

Get three decent players and a 30 handicap. You’ll win everytime

Yea that was my thinking, just put a scratch with a double digit handicap and if they fall just inside a flight they’ll be a huge favorite. Almost all that I play in like this are flighted and net. We have a +5 that always plays in our member guest. They’d win every time if it was gross

We usually limit the difference in low man to high man to 8 strokes to avoid that.

Not a crazy amount, about $70k on Korn Ferry and maybe $100k more on other tours over about a 6 year period. Doesn’t play on tour anymore but still rare where he doesn’t shoot sub 70

Does your member guest limit the difference between the team members indexes?

Flight them on the low handicap no exceptions. This will make everyone play with a like handicap
