NY Post Article

quote:

“We have just been informed that Phil Mickelson has withdrawn from the PGA Championship,” a statement from the PGA of America said. “Phil is the defending champion and currently eligible to be a PGA Life Member and we would have welcomed him to participate. We wish Phil and [wife] Amy the very best and look forward to his return to golf.”

I guess the strain was too much for him to bear.

This is fascinating. At this point, I’m starting to beleive Phil either had murdered someone or was found in bed with a boy and the PGA has the evidence

Anyone who thinks that Phil has tarnished his legacy on tour is fricking retarded. Dude has been fun to watch for years. I hope he gives LIV golf a shot and rakes in the money.

It’s a shame he’s not playing. I wonder if he is doing this to keep the intrigue around the first LIV event.

Whole thing is silly in a world of Twitter trolls and elected officials that can say whatever they want.

Players are independent contractors, not paid employees.

As someone who bought tickets with excitement of watching him repeat, a lot has happened since he won last year

Does that automatically make them eligible to play Tour events?

At this point I am convinced he is holding out for the first LiV event to maximize the hype and press coverage

Shiting on Phil is what the "cool kids" do to stay in the cool kid club

It's a tired bit, but many can't help themselves.

Next up, rumors about Michael Jordon and staged pics with his kids.

Phil is probably done with the PGA. Once this new tour takes off, and the appearance money starts flowing, Phil won't be the last one to exit the building.

Players sign over their media rights when they join the Tour and then re-sign that agreement every year.

FIGJAM was a nice story last year but he calculated this all wrong.

The PGA Tour and the PGA Championship run by the PGA of America aren't the same thing

Not saying they are or not. Phil is technically a Senior now and can make guaranteed and significantly more purse money with this new venture. No need to seek permission from anyone as to where he can play.

The whole situation is f'ed up in that it's a bad look to deny independent contractors the right to work. The lawyers are probably already lining up

No one is forcing him to play on the PGA Tour. I'm not a lawyer, but my take is if you want to play on the PGA Tour you have to abide by their rules.
