So I started playing golf last August (I’m 45). Been playing with my grandads clubs from the 90’s. TM burner driver, Walmart 5 wood, 1992 ping zing irons. Been playing weekly and taking lessons weekly as weather permits.

With the old clubs, I hit it ok. Avg drive is 215-225ish. Hit the 7 iron 145-155 ish.

Lesson today was on the course and the pro brought a demo Mavrik driver for me to use. Omg. Played 4 holes I’ll just say that the game is a lot easier when your approach is a PW or LW than when you need. 4 or 5 iron to have a prayer of reaching the green. With my clubs, I play to about a 25. Today, I was +2 after 4. Lipped out 2 eight foot putts.

I am a believer in the new tech....

Those numbers don’t match up. That’s very clear that you need clubs fitted to you. I’m glad you’re playing better

No, it doesn’t match up. The lie angles are 3 degrees off what I need per my pro. But, I’m in the process of fitting and buying. Just tickled to see that 175 yd approach shots may not be the norm in the future.

Yes! Keep us updated. Also, this board is amazing at finding deals in clubs. Get fit and come post the specs. We can hook you up quick.

People say drive for show and putt for dough....but I’ve always found the game to be easier when I’m a wedge/small iron out in the fairway on my second shot as opposed to taking a drop and hitting my third shot from 200 yards out and needing to bend it around trees.

I took lessons from Monte Scheinblum

He said - and I trust this - they have done studies that the number one thing you can do to lower your scores is to get longer with the driver

Like the OP said... and I’ve experienced this since I started playing: the game gets easier and IMMENSELY more fun when you are playing driver then scoring iron/wedge instead of driver then hybrid/4i every hole.

That’s the premise of Brodie’s book “Every Shot Counts”. You’re always better off being closer to the green than laying up when it comes to strokes gained.

It blew my mind. I fitted for the driver and ordered it. In the process of fitting irons. I’m going with Mavrik driver and apex irons. Between drive and approach, it shortens each non par 3 about 50-60 yards from my circa 1990 clubs that I’m currently using (35ish with D, 20ish with irons)

Yes! I’ve recently went through a swing change and picked up 20-30 yards. (I was already long) it’s a blast chipping into greens instead of hitting full iron shots. I’m ready to go play a longer/ more open course.

So you are nuking 325 drives all day?

I still rather a full wedge than a 50 yard pitch.

Not all day my home course is short though. That’s why I want to go play somewhere else.

It certainly helps being close to a green on a short hole where you can do a legit chip or bump and run. But holes where I end up with a 50/60 yard shot I’d prefer to hit less club and then have a full shot into the green. But I struggle with the shorter shots and miss long.

Yes go get fit by your PGA Professional and then go buy them somewhere else, that is a great idea.

People used to say that, but the strokes-gained era has flipped it on its head.

Driving is the most important skill in golf. There shouldn't be much debate about that any longer. As one example, the guys who do best at the highest levels are great drivers of the ball who occasionally get hot with the putter and not the other way around.
