Anyone seen someone do this when it’s very windy and the ball get blocked by the pin? Happened to me the other day. Not putting with pin in again. Pin can be barely leaning and frick you

Why would you putt with the wind blowing the pin towards you? Your fault for not taking it out. It’s not the pins fault you’re stupid.

I just leave it in because I’m lazy.

There are articles favoring leaving it in, but golf digest did an article that said we should take it out because on off center hits of the stick, it goes out more than if you took it out.

Our greens are pathetic now so it does not matter.

Yes. I saw it happen to a guy in a tournament. Glad I learned from him.

Did you see the speed they used? Invalid test.

That was the point of the article. The only time the pin helps you is if you hit it with a pace of 9-10 feet past the hole.

Initially, I just figured if Bryson did it, it must be science.

I’m just looping for fun with friends. I leave it in when asked and take it out if asked.

I do see if it is leaning to much and take it out if so. Only happens occasionally.

I usually leave it in just for time purposes. Plus I am just a recreational player and never play in tournaments so my score doesn't really mean anything except to me.

Unless we're referencing different articles.

LINK

quote:

In Prof. Mase’s exercise, for putts rolling at a pace equal to 2 1/2 feet past the hole, 100 percent of putts went in. That was true regardless of the scenario: flagstick in, flagstick out, straight in or off-center and regardless of flagstick type. For straight-on putts that would hit the flagstick dead center, there also was no difference on attempts for putts that would have rolled 4 1/2 feet past the hole. Whether the flagstick was in or not, 100 percent of the putts were made. That 100-percent make rate also remained true for attempts on putts rolling eight feet by the hole.

quote:

However, once that velocity was exceeded, the putts holed dropped precipitately. At nine and 10 feet past the hole, the make rate drops well below 50 percent with the flagstick out to ultimately zero. With the flagstick in, it generally remains at 100 percent—even at a pace 11, 12 and 13 feet past the hole

quote:

So that’s the only time the flagstick will help a putt go in the hole that would not have gone in otherwise. The rest of the time—99.99 percent—the better play is to putt with the flagstick out of the hole.

It’s not just about holing the putt

Those putts with too much pace will usually come to rest closer to the hole after striking the pin.

I like it out for short putts and in for longer putts. The visual of the flag in or shadow screws with me on shorter ones.

However, the rule was meant to speed up play so I do whatever is easier for the group. It pisses me off when guys sit there and evaluate pin in or pin out for every single putt.

You get a better read on the line with the pin out. I do, anyway.

10ft and in and I like it out.

I leave it in for downhill putts and short putts where I just try to use it as a back board.
