I am about to get into the market for some new irons. But honestly I don't know what to buy. I suck at golf, but I enjoy playing. How do you walk into a place for a fitting, and know what clubs to buy? There are all these choices of mfg's, and you can't possibly try them all enough to be like, "these are the clubs that are going to help me play better." So what's the method behind picking the right set?

Schedule a fitting and bring your current clubs with you.

The is no exact answer anyone here can give you. An accomplished fitter can find a type of club for you.

After that, it's what looks good to you and give you confidence.

Definitely get fit and let the fitter know what you’re interested in and your goals.

Make sure the iron looks good to you at address, confidence addressing the ball just based off looks is huge imo

Walk in knowing what you want to spend. You can hit what you can afford and then choose from that?

I've owned more iron sets than I can ever remember. At this point, I shop by shaft. Nothing worse than having a great looking iron in a shaft that feels terrible to you. I really think the head itself is a bit overrated. If you you hit them in the middle, they all work great.

Get all the name brand equipment you can afford, that way when you play like crap you still look good.

The way they look at address is about the most important thing for this 20 handicapper,

I’ve always liked a softer looking club head and not too angular or sharp, and thus hit it far better. It’s a strange game, the things that enter your mind while hitting.

Don't forget the iron covers and put your name on your bag.

Start with your price limit. Trying them all within your limit is absolutely the best part of a fitting

How they look/feel at address is very important. Shaft is also very important as others have mentioned.

I would say definitely start with the Game Improvement category, and look at the major brands.

Personally I would recommend the Mizuno JPX line.
