Need New Set - What ya recommend?

Been away from golf for a longggg time, literally have clubs 15+ years old.
When I was playing a good bit, I was an average golfer. Typically mid to upper 80s.
Looking for two different recommendations, both need to lean towards clubs with plenty of forgiveness.
1. I’d like to get a driver and a wood pre-owned. What’s a good forgiving driver? I’ve used Calloway Preowned in the past, is there another site that offers other makes?
2. Need a new set of irons. Is it worth getting fitted? Been seeing a lot of rave about Takomo irons?

I’m currently hitting a Ping G440 LST and G440 max fairway Woods. They are great.
I can not say enough about how good the Callaway Elyte irons are. I was playing ZX7’s. They are the same size as a players iron. Held them next to the ZX7’s and they are the same. You can’t tell they are game improvement. They feel soft and are extremely forgiving. They are really consistent distance wise. I’ve been playing these since February and I haven’t had a single flier. They are fantastic. You can shape them however your want. Draw, fade, high low. Just easy to hit and easy to control. But yes, get fit. It doesn’t cost you any extra. No reason not too. What works for me may not work for you.

I'm in a similar position. I don't know how you can really go purely off of advice. I had a 17 year old set of irons, but was lacking a driver and fairway woods. I would have probably waited until I was comfortable for my swing for all of them, but started with the woods since I didn't have anything.
Everything I was reading was pointing me to the Ping G440. I had it in my mind I'd walk out with that. Went to Golf Galaxy and hit everything I could afford. The Taylor Made Qi10's just felt best to me and after a little work and a lesson, I was hitting it better than I expected for this point in my journey.
For the irons, I'm going to get a few more lessons and build my consistency. Then I'll make a selection. Got a "coupon" for a free fitting at Golf Galaxy when I bought the driver and 3 wood which I'll use for that purchase. I don't view it as a great fitting seeing it's a big box store, but I am going to use the time to try as many irons as possible. Will make a selection off of that. I've kind of quit obsessing over reviews so that I don't influence my decision based on what I read vs. what I feel.

Im gaming a Ping i530's,230's blueprint s combo set and love every minute of it.
I'm sure the s55's or i210's would be a decent set to pick up 2nd hand.

If you’re a veteran or know a veteran, both Taylor Made and PXG have 15% discounts on anything they sell.
The Qi irons from TM are fantastic game improvement clubs and come in at $850 for 5-PW and AW. If your current clubs are that old, a new 5i has roughly the same loft as your old 4i.

So I was in a similar position. Gave the game up back in 2000. Started back three years ago to have something in common with my future SIL. Caught the bug, and decided to play often. I'm blessed with a club membership that my company takes care of.
I pulled the 30-year-old Ping Zing Black Dots out of the closet. After a year, I decided to purchase my woods first. The local pros suggested this, due top the techno advances above my old woods (Adams Fat Head Driver, etc.).
I went with the Ping G430SFT. I bought the driver, 3-wood, 7-wood, and 4H and could not be happier. Still struggle with the 3-wood in certain lyes but getting better.
This year, I decided to buy my irons. I've never owned any sets other than Pings, but decided to shop. I did my research, and a large part of the expense of these major brands goes towards sponsorship and endorsements. Wasn't interested in 30% of my purchase going to a golfer endorsement.
I purchased the Tacomo 201. These are a forged back which is a cross between the 101 Player Performance and the 301 Blades. I've used them twice on the course and several hours in a hitting bay. I was initially scared I should have stayed with the 101's but think I made a great choice.
The 201 have great feel, while still giving me some forgiveness. I'm not a long hitter but picked up a 1 to 2 club+ distance with the irons. Still figuring out distance. Delivered and ready to go for $700. After Hovat started showcasing, their supply chain dwindled. Thought they would be delivered in 3-weeks but took 8 weeks. I just ordered my additional wedges that were not part of the set. Highly recommend.
I used the savings to buy a five pack of lessons. Had an old guy at the club tell me, "at some point, it's about the Indian and not the bow and arrow"
My apologies if too long.

quote:I watch a lot of club tests. They are all good now. But if forgiving is #1, I'd say Ping. I don't think there is a huge difference between the models starting with "4", so save some money and buy an older model.

quote:I used to run through multiple sets a year. No reason other than I liked doing that. None of that ever made a lick of difference until I started shopping based upon shaft. Once I found a couple of models and flexes that fit me, it made buying irons really easy and predictable. So as to is it worth getting fitted? I'd say yes if you really have no clue what shaft makes you swing better.
2. Need a new set of irons.

You really can’t go wrong here.
Whatever you want to spend on the woods and hybrids from those lines. Hot Metal or ZX5’s on the irons. Piece together some wedges and fool around with some putters till you find one you like.
Good to go.
