Stupid question - but are there any tournaments (besides home, course weekly scrambles ) for a guy with an 18-20 handicap?

Been wanting to give it a shot, and while I know I’m not ready for the big time, I really just wanna compete in something

Sorry to hijack, but this is sort of related to the OP

** i always assumed that those who competed in tournaments were scratch golfers or at least close to it

This one is "invitation only". Usually doesn't mean jack, but if you're new to the event, you're last on the pecking order of getting in.

Dates are usually mid august.

Prien Lake 4 Ball isn't invitation only. It's the second weekend in August. You can just call the golf shop and they will mail you a form when they come out. It's a good tournament.

Look for flighted tournaments. You will be grouped day 2 either based on Handicap or Day 1 score. Playing in those is what made me fall in love with golf. It is way more fun than scrambles.

Beau Pre up in Natchez, MS has a 4ball tournament each spring and fall. Groups are flighted based on handicap. I’ve played it a few years and the course is usually in great shape for the tourney.

Both are great tournaments but not sure of the conditions lately, I’ve been told they passed out a nice assessment that basically drove most of their membership away They are holding on by barely making the interest payment on the course, the public city course Duncan Park is actually in better shape I’m told.

Your thread got me thinking, why doesn’t the LGA have flighted tournaments either 4ball or single stroke play. It would probably attract more golfers and would allow people to play with their dads, friends who suck at golf but fun to play with, etc.

They do some Net tournaments. Which is pretty fun if everyone has legit handicaps.

I’ll check my calander

Warning - I suck now - and my skills from 20 years ago have eroded.

With your 11 and my 12, we may finish last.
