Staying at the Grand in August and playing one day. Which course should I play, Dogwood or Azalea?

It's been many years since I stayed there and played both a few times each. I preferred the Azalea back then but not sure what they are like today. Planning to go back for a few days in the fall.

They are both excellent courses, can't go wrong with either.

I played Azalea back in February. It was 39 degrees and raining the day I played, but the greens were some of the best I've putted in years. I played both the Preserve and Fallen Oak a few weeks later, and the greens at the Grand were better than both of those courses. Pretty sure Azalea is considered the better course than Dogwood, but I've never played Dogwood.

They’re both nice, but I always drive down the rode to Rock Creek.

Interesting. I'm playing 3 rounds in a few weeks. Am scheduled for Magnolia/Azalea/Magnolia. Should I make the drive to Rock creek for one? Didn't know about it.

Been a member at Lakewood for a year or so. Both courses are In great shape. Greens still a little firmer on azalea because they were redone a year after dogwood. Better golfers tend to prefer Azalea. It’s a little longer but really good. Dogwood also good though. Holes 2-4 on dogwood run back toward the grand and are really good looking setups.

Can’t go wrong with either! I would not recommend adding Rock Creek to your schedule. Not near the same conditions.

I’m playing Rock Creek and one of the grand course is a few weeks. Looking forward to it. Glad to hear Rock Creek is recommended.

Have a place in Fairhope, hard to go wrong on either one. Usually prefer Dogwood though.

Thanks for the insight. Since I’m not that strong a player and def not long I think I’ll opt for Dogwood. Looks pricey but what the f, I’m on vacation

Played Rock Creek on Friday. Staff was great and course layout was also very interesting. Land movement is natural and flows well. The greens were very slow and I just couldn’t get the ball to the hole. If they could improve the speed it would really be great.

Played Azalea at Lakewood yesterday and it was pristine. Fairway lies were perfect. Greens were true and a good speed. Layout was beautiful. Really a great golf course. Highly recommend it.

We spent Wed-Sun at the Grand last weekend. The storm got us on Saturday, but I was able to play Thursday and Friday with my dad. We played Azalea both days. Were scheduled for Dogwood on Saturday even though it was recently aerated.

It's been said a few times in this thread, but I was thoroughly impressed with Azalea. I've played a ton of flat South LA and Destin area golf, so the elevation changes in the rolling fairways on the course surprised me.

Loved the layout. I play a low draw which is why I'm not very good. But a couple of the tee shots required me to hit a cut which was fun. There was a driveable Par 4 which is pretty rare and fun. I hit it on the green one day and then in the water the next.

They didn't need water on the Par 3s to make them good holes. Though the one with the water did produce the highlight of our trip, an ace from Dad.

The greens were quick and true. Fairways were lush and gave you every opportunity to hit quality iron shots.

My one complaint was no yardage books available. I took a couple of poor lines off tees because I wasn't sure where to play to.

But overall it was a fantastic golf course. Dogwood will be hosting the US Women's Senior Am in September. I can't wait to get back to play that one.

Great review. I played Azalea on Thursday and it was dang near perfect.

One correction to your post …. The other course is “Dogwood”, not Magnolia. I’m sure it will be equally as good in the next week or so.

I will be there in August. Just curious, did you make your golf reservations already?

For those that have been there, how far out should I reserve? Tee times hard to get?

That’s a good question. As a single should I be able to get out midweek easy enough or should I get a tee time now?

They allow them a month out. I got them...a month out. But Thursday we literally were on the range by ourselves and Friday we played in 3:15. So, I wouldn't lose much sleep over it.
