are they friends or work related?

If they are friends, invite one of them to go to the range with you and decline playing a round. They will respect you more after they see you on the range. Feel free to go hang out with them on the course or clubhouse if they just want some time to hang out.

If it is work related, not sure what the correct answer is. Suck it up and go, be as cordial as possible and pick up if a hole gets rough and you seem to be slowing things down too much.

Also it's possible these dudes are also terrible at golf.

I've known guys who brag about playing 4 times a week and then when we played it was embarrassing how fricking terrible they were.

I’ve been playing two times a week and I’m alternating between high 80’s and 105.

Trying to get better but we know how that goes.

As far as OP, if they know you aren’t great and are ok with that, I would go. Go have fun, drink a few drinks, and chase that little white ball a bit. Just don’t try to finish a hole when you are several strokes over par. Haha

Is this for a bachelor party or pre-wedding thing? If so, just ride along with your buddy and get hammered.

ETA: If you show up without clubs most courses will let you ride along with the group as long as they don't see you hitting any shots.

ETAA: Or as others have said, if you're willing to drop $100 and have a good time go for it. The group should be aware that you are there just to hang out and make a fool of yourself.

I definitely wouldn't want to drop $100 at a nice course if I literally can't hit the ball.

You bring up a good point. If OP is comfortable with doing that AND his friends are well aware that he has literally never swung a golf club in his life and they STILL insist he come then frick it, go for it.

Just be sure to not hold the group up, don't look for lost balls. Just drop next to where your cart mate is and hit from there. Pick up when you swing and miss 3 times in a row.

If it’s a scramble format be sure to fudge your score by 10-15 strokes.

Go play under these conditions:

1. Drinking is involved and the course has hot beer cart girls.

2. Bring money. Tell the guy you play with that you'll go, but you have to play two-man best ball against the other two, but they have to give you a shot a hole on the four hardest holes on each nine. This way, you play your shot where your friend plays from, unless you get a great shot (blind hog, acorn, you know the rest).

Your buddy can get a read on the greens from you and you might drop one or two to win or halve the hole.

I think you'd have a lot of fun and not feel out of place.

Be prepared to lose... graciously, and buy at least one round on the course and one round in the clubhouse.
