I play a course that is mostly hardpan with little grass cover. Looking for recommendation for irons that might play well for this type of course. Are thinner soles better?

The guy swinging the irons needs to hit ball first

Honestly if my course was described as hardpan with little grass cover I’d be looking at changing courses not irons.

The answer though would be low bounce which doesn’t necessarily mean thinner soles although I doubt you’re going to find low bounce on GI irons so it will come with thinner soles as well

My home course has tight lies. Anything with a V-sole like Srixon or Sub70 really works great.

You’ll learn to strike the ball that’s for sure.

V-sole

I played hard pan in MS recently and the v-sole kept bouncing the leading edge into the ball for thin shots. V-soles are ideal for tighter lies, but not straight hard pan IMO.

This is Texas municipal courses in the winter and early spring. Good news is if you mishit it, you can still get your distance in the roll.

One of our local courses has hard pack greens and they cut the grass shorter than courses with a decently soft base. So you can hit a perfect shot and land it on the green and it just rolls until it goes off the green. I refuse to play there anymore.

Thinner soles with lower bounce will likely allow you to strike it better. Also, a club that forgives a thin shot would help, so I would avoid pure blades/players CBs. I would look at Cobra King Tour, Taylormade P770, Titleist T100s, Mizuno Pro 223 or 225, and Callaway Apex Pro. The Srixons and Pings are high bounce, which may make them hard to strike off hardpan without feeling like you are punching it.

Find a new course. Golf is a game meant to be played on grass, and I find more and more these scalped courses are the result of lazy grounds crews. I left my last course because of this, and I am vocal in a pro shop about the bullshite that many maintenance crews pull.
