From Founder Dave Portnoy:

Barstool Sports

quote:

So Riggs and I got in a huge debate a couple weeks ago on Barstool Radio. The question at hand was whether I could win the US Open with unlimited mulligans. For me the answer was a no brainer. Of course I would. That’s not even me bragging. That’s just me knowing what I’m capable of and knowing what unlimited mulligans actually means. I’d 100% birdie every par 3 and then par everything else. That’s -4 a day. Riggs projects the winner at Shinnecock this year will shoot -4 for the entire tournament. The ENTIRE TOURNAMENT. That means I’ll win by roughly 12 strokes. Easy peasy

Riggs countered my argument with a bunch of mumbo jumbo that made no sense. His main arguments seem to be that if I was in the leading group after Friday I’d run out of daylight on Saturday and Sunday because I’d tee off late in the afternoon. He also claims that there are certain holes that it doesn’t matter how many strokes I get I just don’t have the shots needed in my bag because I stink. Listen I agree that time could be a factor the last 2 days of the tournament, but I still have 12 shots to work with. I could mix in a few bogeys and still win in a landslide. So the debate raged on.

Well apparently the good folks at the USGA caught wind of our argument and have generously offered to let me play Shinnecock on Monday with unlimited mulligans. Okay great. I’ll finally get to shut Riggs up and prove I’m always right when it comes to these hypothetical sports debates. But then I noticed the part whether the USGA said I only get 5 hours to play. Wait what? Umm that’s not unlimited mulligans. That’s how long I should get on the weekend when I’ve already built an insurmountable lead. When I said I’d win with unlimited mulligans I assumed that for the first 2 rounds I’d play from dawn to dusk to achieve my perfect score of -4 per day. And yes I know people think I’ll get blisters. Well when you’ve built an empire delivering newspapers brick by brick with your bare hands you don’t have time for blisters.

What could you shoot in 5hrs and unlimited mulligans from the tips and US Open conditions?

(Portnoy sucks at golf by the way, and there is no way he finishes in 5hrs anywhere close to par)

Even with the 5 hour time limit, there is no way I don’t break par. 5 hours is a long time for 1 guy to play 18. Just imagine having unlimited attempts at a putt. I’m around a 10 handicap, and I could get it done.

I play around a 10 as well and I feel the same. My long game would get me handy in regulation and unlimited shots around the green would be the difference.

as long as you are a competent golfer, you should be able to do it.

At SH? Ok breaking par there is not gonna happen in 5 hours at a US Open setup IDGAF how many mulligans you have.

False you can’t shoot under par there in 5 hours, it’s a 4 hour walk atleast playing your own game.

I’d sink a 40’er for birdie on my 40th try for a smooth 99

I'm not sure there's anyone whose golf opinions I value less, than Dave Portnoy.

I have no idea what I'd shoot, but I think I could at least come close to breaking par. I'm probably somewhere in the 3-5 handicap range (I really need to get that back) and being able to re-putt almost anything inside 10 feet until you make it would help your score out a ton.

Me, by myself? Can I ride in a cart?
Not sure I could. Currently an 8 but I’m 70 and play the whites. 7500 yards. I would wear out the grip on my 3 wood. For second shots!
No I couldn’t. Don’t putt well enough

Playing by yourself, you’d have about 16 minutes per hole if using the full 5 hours. Figure each hole is 500 yards long, which we know they aren’t,.....At a decent walking pace you’d need 10 or so minutes to walk the hole giving you 5 minutes to hit shots. Plenty of time to hit 10-12 shots per hole if necessary. I’m a 6 and am confident I could shoot 4 or 5 under given unlimited mulligans.

I just don't see it being that easy. You aren't guaranteed to hit that shot needed in those 5 minutes. Also, your approaches would have to be pretty close to be able to make putts on US open greens. I mean at some point I think you just won't be able to make the required shots from tee to green to give yourself a legitimate chance at some birdies.

It won’t be easy, but if you think of it like playing a 4 man scramble by yourself, it’s not that hard.

If i could shoot a 59 in a 4 man scramble every time I play golf, I should be able to break par at a US Open venue.

Thursday or Friday would be late tee time, not both early. Sounds like this guy doesn’t know tour golf

It depends on what “unlimited mulligans” really means. To me, it would seem that unlimited mulligans means that you get to retry your regulation shot and the regulation shot is no longer an option. Thus, if you hit a drive in the high grass and you opt to hit a mulligan, then hit that mulligan OB, you don’t have the option to play the ball in the high grass. Instead, you would re-tee and be hitting 3.

I wouldn’t think they were offering a mulligan on a mulligan. That’s like your not even keeping score . . . which defeats the whole argument.

It’s unlimited, which means you only take the good shots. Hit it OB three times in a row? Tee up another

No, it’s really unlimited. Just a race against the clock. I believe he starts at 2 eastern today.

They periscoped the first hole just now, the rest will be updated on barstool Instagram story I believe.

Took about 20 rapid fire putts from 20 ft to make par. 1st hole took 15 minutes.

There’s actually regular foursomes going off behind them which has to be maddening
