As the title states I am really ignorant on golf. I really enjoy it the times that I get to go. I have a question about height. Is it worth it to get fitted for a beginner? Seems to me that clubs that are custom would pay off for you in the long run because you can hone in on your swing but others say the fundamentals never change. Just curious.

I wouldn’t but that’s just me. The most important thing in the beginning is learning the game. Learn the fundamentals of the golf swing. Learn the mental aspect of the game. The first investment my dad made for me and what i will do for my boys is lessons before equipment. Once you learn the basic fundamentals and can break 100 then I’d go get fitted. People may disagree but the fundamental and mental aspect of the game is way more important.

Buy a used set.

Would get regular flex shafts unless you had a baseball homerun bat speed.

Don’t get fitted. When you start out your swing isn’t going to be consistent. I’d just get a regular set of game improvement clubs (used from Edwin watts or CallowayPreOwned.com) and work on your swing for a while.

I’ve been playing for 3 years and I still am not consistent enough with my swing to justify getting fitted in my opinion.

Have fun and remember “you’re not good enough to get angry” whenever you have a bad shot.

My opinion, if you plan on picking up the game and playing often - then I would get properly fitted for some clubs. If you are planning on playing a couple times a year, just grab a used set that is less than 5 years old and work on your swing.

I do think that lessons are probably more beneficial than a fitting - particularly as a high-handicapper.

Oh yea, I forgot that part. Definitely take some lessons. That way you will be able to dial in your swing. Lessons are way more beneficial than new equipment.

It really depends on how serious you are about how you want to shoot. For a lot of people, golf is a great outlet to shoot the shite with friends and drink some beers while doing it. They're playing for a good time and not necessarily to score well. I play with guys who are there to just drink and cut up and still shoot in the 70s, and others who curse, yell, and get pissed off because "there went their chance to break 100 today". With that being said, the guy in the 70s is a former college golfer with a $1200 set of custom fitted irons, and will only play a handful of times a year. Mr.100 is playing a used set of Pings "because they were a great bargain at Edwin Watts".

The game is a lot more enjoyable when you enjoy it for what is: a game that you can't win, only play.

So a question on used vs new sets. Is a Taylormade, Callaway, or Titleist used set better than some brand new off brand set?

Yes. For the simple fact that once you're ready to move on to your next set, you can sell them and recoup quite a bit of your initial money back.

Yes, I’d say without a doubt. You can get a used set of game improvement irons that will be very forgiving and will be drastically better than any new box set you can buy. Look on Callowaypreowned.com for a game improvement set and a cheap driver and cheap putter.

Probably. I would focus on cavity back (game improvement) clubs. Blades are much less forgiving. Yes. they may have better resale, but don't cut the "off brands" short. Tour Edge and Wilson have really good clubs for the money.

Good reviews ...

Looks like a great set. The ONLY negative might be resale. You would get more in return for a used set of Apex, Epic, or Big Bertha when you decide to upgrade, but otherwise the Strata look like a great start. Nowhere near a professional, but just my opinion. :)

My buddy got a set of Calloway Edge clubs from Costco for I think $400. Solid set. Comes with an odyssey putter and super stroke grip too. I’d put the edge ahead of the Strata clubs by a bit. But depending on budget, you can’t go wrong with either of those sets.

I wouldn't for the same reasons others have stated.

That being said, I've had good luck with the Ping fitting system on their website (chill out Ping haters... I am not saying he should go buy pings). Use their fitting system to get yourself in the right ball park and then look for a good set of used clubs that fit those specs.

ETA: Ping WebFit

This is how new I am to it. I didn’t know ping had haters every time I have borrowed clubs from friends I have always liked Mizuno irons and TaylorMade drivers.
