How Late is too Late to Start?

I am 30 and have played a round exactly 1 time (RIP every golf ball my buddy had that day).
I'm an athletic guy...but nobody in my family played golf so there was nobody to teach me. Hand/eye coordination and all that should be no problem.
Is it too late for me? Seems expensive to even get started. How would one even go about getting started without a coach/teacher? Go to the driving range and start guessing?
ETA: More specifically, too late to become half decent.

It's never too late. My great grandfather didn't start playing until he was 65. He played until he was 89. He couldn't see the ball anymore or walk that well.

yeah, this really doesn't matter at all. the golf swing is all about body control and being able to use/direct momentum.
but it's never too late to start

I would go to the driving range a few times and hit nothing but 7 iron for awhile to establish the basis of your comfortable swing. Then get a lesson.

Think I'll probably do this.
Appreciate the replies fellas.

My grandfather was 35 before he picked up a golf club. The man won 7 club championships and became a scratch golfer. He put some serious time into the game though.

Its never too late to learn the difference between to, too and two.

you can buy some outdated new clubs fairly cheap. Whole set would run you 300-400. Another 100 for putter, bag balls glove etc. Start with forgiving irons, regular flex shafts. Go to range and try to get the ball up in the air without to much turn right or left. Don't worry about distance. Once you are doin this, go play a round. Either you will love it or quit. Toughest sport you'll ever love. If you don't like it sell your stuff. Good luck.

I started at 35 after moving to an area and getting tired of nothing to do when friends of mine got together and played golf. 5 years later, I'm a 13 handicap. Broke 80 for the first time last year. Granted, I'm OCD and have played a shite ton in those 5 years but still.
It's never too late.

I haven't a clue what you're talking about.

Basically do what he says but I would try to start working with a pro asap after figuring out whether you love it or hate it. I would want a pro to start building the mechanics of a proper swing from the get go before I self ingrained bad swing habits because you don't know any better. A pro will build your game up in stages.
The only thing I will stress is practice, and then maybe some more practice. Also be patient. You aren't gonna be a scratch golfer overnight. The thing about golf is you have to devote the time to practice to get any better.
