There used to be a rule that whoever putted first had to hole out first, without re-marking their ball. That would speed up PGA events immensely if it was brought back.

If I run my first putt 4 feet past, I'd rather let the rest of the group putt while I read my 4 foot putt. If you have to hole out before someone else can go, you will still read the putt, but it creates more dead time. Imo

that used to be a skill.

or the benefit a local caddy brought.

Amateur rounds are long enough, they dont need a greens book.

I only have two pet peeves, I hate it when guys fluff their ball.

"Play the ball down and where it lies"

Ground under repair and wet conditions are one thing. But if you bump the ball on every shot, you will suck in a tournament.

And Putt it out, guys take a gimme and then they nonchalantly rake the ball all over the place. It doesn't take any longer to just take a putt.

Play the game as it was meant to be, it will be more rewarding when you have a great round.

I’m in the play it down and putt it out crowd.

I’m for range finders and against green books.

Are yardage and/or greens books available at courses where Tour events aren't played?

Most of the better courses I’ve been to have both for sale in the clubhouse

I personally think greens books are useless but to each their own I guess.

Definitely NOT useless unless you have an insane memory.

This shite helps a lot when looking where to place your ball on an approach shot:

Before I had to quit playing because of lower back problems, I pretty much played the Eisenhower Golf Course at the Air Force Academy exclusively. It's a Robert Trent Jones design and once hosted a Shell's Wonderful World of Golf show. Tiger played there in an amateur event. We relied on the yardage on the sprinkler heads and experience to read the greens. The greens were huge and had lots of elevation changes and break to them. I didn't have many rounds without at least one three putt.

Differs from course to course. Usually $10 or so most places I’ve been

Some are cheaper and have a picture of the hole with yardage to bunkers and from sprinkler heads. Nothing crazy, but it's helpful.

Some are tour style and show a ton of detail. Those are very expensive and I've only seem them at really nice clubs.

I can see buying a greens book if you're a good player and haven't played the course before and will likely play it again.

For a 36 capper to buy either is a waste of money imo. Can you imagine a high capper spending time & holding up play checking a greens book for a 30 foot putt for a triple.

Play how you want, its supposed to be fun. 99% of people are still going to suck whether they hit 18 cups or not, who gives a shite

Yeah. It must be nice to look at a book and think it would be beneficial to stick it in the far right corner. I aim for the green and pray.
