Help with buying a club

Firstly, I know nothing about golf or clubs. It’s my brothers birthday coming up and he mentioned that he’d been using his friends hybrid driver or wood? And he really liked it. Was going to surprise him and buy one for him. Any suggestions trying to keep it under $180. Thanks

If you’re looking for something name brand and new at that price point it will be a model that is a couple of years old.
Look at Dick’s and find something Callaway, Taylormade, or Titleist that fits your budget. They will all be pretty good.
You can probably get a 2018 model hybrid at that price but not a driver or 3-wood, unless you want to buy some type of knockoff/clone club.

I can't imagine being a male and knowing so little about a sport. I've never played soccer in my life, but I know what a center back or a midfielder are.

Yeah, I’d try to get a picture or description of the club. It’s likely he’ll want the specific make and model. You’ll want to note the loft of the head (degrees) and look for markings on the shaft that should indicate the flex of the shaft. Look for an R,S or X

Wanna give me a basic synopsis of cricket? How about curling? Rugby?

Gtfo
I don’t play golf. I watch golf as I watch and played football basketball, baseball, and tennis back in my hey day.
He said it was a hybrid club. All I really knew. But thanks for your input. Prob forgotten more about the other sports than you know

The bowler has to bounce the ball into the hitter. "runs" are scored by going back and forth to a point, and the ball can be hit either way.

curling
Pretty self explanatory game.

Can't pass the ball forward. Points are scored similar to football, get the ball to your opponents "end one"
Difference is none of those are major American sports, golf is.

Golf- get the ball in the hole in the least amount of strokes

Don't actually buy him a club unless you actually know the exact model he was looking at. Get a gift card instead.
Many golfers are particular about their equipment. I'd hate for someone to get me a club without my input.

Yep!
I would find the golf store with the biggest selection in your area, or if he is a member at a club I would go there. Get him a gift card for what you would be willing to spend.
If you are in the Baton Rouge area you are pretty limited to courses (which the ones with better selections are private courses) or Edwin Watts.
The vast majority of current model, new hybrids are going to cost over $200 though. there are exceptions however like some of the pings, taylormades, cobras. BUT they ALL go on sale from time to time which makes the giftcard perfect. He can get exactly what he wants, possibly even fitted, and he may even prefer to put up the extra money to get a different model.

www.budgetgolf.com has great prices. They sell a lot of club models that are a couple of years old.

I agree with this. It’s like buying clothes for your wife.

No way I would recommend buying a club for someone else without knowing very specific details about what he prefers. The fact that you referred to a "hybrid driver or wood" tells me you are far from knowing what he is looking for.
My suggestion (seriously): Get your brother a gift card to a golf store, or even an online store who sells used clubs also. Even if you simply get it for your max amount you listed, he'll only have to make up the difference if there is one.

I agree with getting him a gift card. Club purchasing is a very personal thing

I'm trying to find another club to fill my bag. I have a gap between my 3W and 4H. In other words, I don't have a 5W, 3 iron/hybrid, or anything else in between the 3W and 4H. I'm hitting my 3W around 215 to 225 and I hit my 4H anywhere around 195 to 200 (205 if I hit it perfect). Any suggestions on what to look at in filling the gap? Never owned a 5W, so I don't have any experience in hitting one. My old set of clubs, I had a 3 iron that I would hit decent at times. With my new set, I hit the 4-6 hybrids really well which makes me think a 3 hybrid would be better suited for me. I just got back in golf in the last month, so I am still learning all this new technology clubs have that wasn't there 5-6 years ago when I stopped playing.
