What's your next best course?

I know everyone loves Kivah Dunes, but it just doesn't do it for me. It's been a decade since I've played GUlf Shores GC, Peninsula, or Craft Farms. How are they now? My initial recollection is Peninsula was significantly better than CF.

This is my Gulf Shores Golf post that I've posted and added to over the years:

Peninsula- If you are going to drive there, play Kiva Dunes. if you can’t afford Kiva, play Gulf Shores Golf Club, but if you play Peninsula, enjoy an apple from the barrel between nines. It's the third best golf course on Ft. Morgan Road. The positive is that it has 27 holes and is always in really good shape. I just don't find it to be anything to write home about.

GSCC- Great course, one of my favorites in Gulf Shores. Difficult layout, but fair. Last summer it was in the best shape I'd ever seen it. It's a park style golf course.

Craft Farms- Nice but nothing special. You will leave your round and say “wow, that was a well-kept course, but something I could have played in Baton Rouge.” That statement applies to both courses. It is a neighborhood course well off the beach.

Kiva Dunes- It is the quintessential gulf coast golf course. It’s just off the beach and is home to some of the most picturesque holes in the South. It is unbearably difficult from the tips with the wind, but from up a tee, it becomes manageable and fun. It is always in good shape and has an excellent practice facility.

Perdido Bay Golf Club- Nice, but I found it to be somewhat difficult. It is in close proximity to Lost Key. I've only played it once because it's on the other side of town from where we normally stay.

Lost Key- known as Lost Ball. That should tell you everything you need to know. Every person I know that plays this course complains about it.

GlenLakes Golf Club- you can book four people for like $17 a person. It’s a niceish course as well. Definitely the best bang for your buck, by far. No where in the same league as Kiva or GSCC, but for $17, you can't beat it. This is where I'd play if I played with people who don't golf and didn't want to spend $80-$100 a round.

Definitive Ranking of all East Alabama, West Florida Golf Courses

1- Kiva Dunes
2- Gulf Shores Golf Club
3- Craft Farms (either)
3- Glenlakes Golf Club
3- Peninsula

6- Perdido Bay Golf Club
7- Lost Ball

The tie for three is based on what you are looking for out of your golf round.

I didn't include it, butome people will extend out to include Rock Creek. Some people will travel to play it from Gulf Shores, but I'd rather play it on the way up or back. The layout is a lot of fun. It has some good elevation changes. I've really enjoyed my rounds at RC.

CAVEAT: I haven't played any of them in the last 6 months, so I have no clue how they are in terms of shape.

Just played Kiva, Peninsula, and Gulf Shores a few weeks ago. Kiva was perfect, and since the last Hurricane is much more manageable. The brush has been eliminated, so it appears much more open. And you have a chance to retrieve an errant drive.

Peninsula was in excellent shape. The Marsh 9 is probably my favorite.

Gulf Shores was in the worst shape I've seen it in over the last 5 years. Great track, ton of weeds on greens. Speed was good but they were bumpy.

this is accurate played it for the first and last time in 2020. The thing is you can crack a beautiful shot from the tee and think well I should be set up nice. then go around the bend and there is a patch of some weird arse bush someone put in there for aesthetics or something and wind up dropping a ball like you did on half the holes before

I can echo this about GSGC- I played there last week. Paid $95 and was pretty disappointed with the condition at that price knowing how pure it’s been in the past. Bare spots on greens, creeping invasive grasses on many greens, and the green surrounds/edges of bunkers filled with weeds and weird grasses.

On the plus side all the bunkers were well maintained and freshly raked. Course was dry even with rain the day before. Pace of play was great; we didn’t wait on a single hole. That could be a function of the price and the condition.

I hated Lost Key the first time I played it, for the obvious reasons. You really can't miss a fairway or any greens on a par 3 or it's almost always a penalty area. It's very difficult if you're not at least a decent player.

However, I've played it a few times in the last few years and I've come to enjoy it. It's always in immaculate condition. The greens are some of the best I've played on in the Gulf Coast. Not quite as windy because it's a little bit off the beach.

Played Lost Key and Kiva last week. Lost Key was a turd. The greens were good but the fairways and tee boxes looked like bunkers with the sand everywhere and lack of grass in many spots. It'll be a while before I go back and we own a townhome in LostKey but they got some work to do to get that course together.

Kiva was great as usual but windy as hell and it made it tough.

I really like the Peninsula and not sure why it doesn't get more love on here but we all have our reasons.

I like Peninsula as well. Other than Kiva, there’s really nothing special about any of the courses down there. That is not to disparage them, but to me they’re all mostly the same and personal preference comes down to course conditions when you play and general layout preference.

Except Lost Key. Frick that ball stealing course.

Damn that sucks to hear, it was in great shape last summer.

It seems like a lot of these Gulf Coast courses can go from good to shite and vice versa in a matter of months

I can not stand Peninsula

Love Kiva

At least they try to keep Peninsula in good shape.

Nice write up! I live in Foley, I play at Glenn Lakes a good bit. Pretty easy to snatch up a tee time.
