Anyone have an older generation? I want to experiment with one, primarily for tracking distance and stats. What recommendations do y'all have for brand/model that will give me GPS readouts of the hole along with the ability to track and log distance? Preferably without any subscription fees. I play local BR courses.
TIA
TIA

I have Garmin 40 I have used for years and love. Compared to a laser it is within 3 yds.

Buy an apple watch or Samsung depending on your phone. I have a subscription to GolfLogix but it’s not really worth it to me. The subscription does have the ability to show you the greens slopes, break etc..
My laser is always within a couple of yards of what my watch says.

I don't really want to wear a smart watch all the time. I really want a golf specific watch to track my avg. yardages, get a good understanding of front/center/back of greens, and then distance to cover various hazards.
A laser is great but can't do what I'm trying to do. I foresee using both.

The cheapest Garmin Approach watch you can find on e-bay should fit what you're looking for then you can upgrade if you want.
I have a Garmin Forerunner I've been using since my Ironman / Marathon days and there is a golf function so I use that but it gives me basically what you're saying..front, center and back distances and tracks score but even the earlier models of the approach would have those functions.
They also have a handheld version as well since you're not necessarily looking for a watch perse.
Nevermind...you're talking about tracking yardages, sorry; I missed that. That would be a PIA with a watch. You'd be better off using an app like 18birdies or getting a more upgraded version of the approach watch.

I've found it to be non-intrusive and fairly quick after getting the hang of it.
The gyros detect the swing and then you scroll to the club. Pretty easy actually.

I've been using the Shot Scope V5 for 2 years, and i like it a lot. I also play around BR, and I don't wear a daily watch. I've used the Garmin S-12, S44, and tested my buddy's S70 for a couple of rounds. I didn't have issues with any of them. The V5 package came with shot trackers. No subscription. Huge amount of data. Every bit as accurate as the Garmins I've used. When i bought it the knock against it was the data presentation on their dashboard wasn't very user friendly, and the X5 touchscreen model was hard to use when your hands were sweaty or in rainy conditions. They've since overhauled the website and app and it's 100x better. My only knock against it has been two of the club trackers stopped working after a year or so. I just bought another full pack of trackers (~$40) and save the extras incase it happens again. #1 for me was definitely NO SUBSCRIPTION

I have the Garmin S62 and love it. I can review each shot from the day and compare to previous rounds. It will show the distances I hit each club, scorecard, and a ton more features I haven't even touched.
