Golf Major ruined by unnecessary advertising wall
The LPGA major this weekend was marred by a wall erected on the 18th island green even though there were no seats and no fans.

It was mocked as the Great Wall of Dinah (named after long time LPGA backer Dinah Shore).

The artificial backstop allowed players, including winner Mirim Lee, to blast their approach shot at the par 5 off the wall and suffer no penalty. Without the wall, Lee's shot would have made into the water.

Instead Lee was able to chip in for eagle, make the playoff, and ultimately win the championship.

Great Wall of Dinah

“I definitely thought to utilize the back and the backboard,” said Lee after her victory dip. “When I had practice rounds, I had practiced that shot, so it was a definite for me to use the space there.”

quote:

Talked to Mirim Lee's caddie Matt Glczis (not a typo).

Said the 72nd hole approach was 215 yards, between 4-iron and 5-wood. They went with the 5-wood to use the backstop:

"Our play is to hit it into the middle of the green, let it run into the blue thing and get a free drop."

"Without that being there we probably have to lay up because none of your long clubs are going to hold the green - it’s too firm."

The crazy thing is the LPGA could have used virtual signage which would be visible to TV viewers but not block shots onto the green. Sort of like the yellow lines during football games or virtual ads during soccer.

Sadly, this was a case of corporate greed needlessly affecting the outcome of a major sporting event.

What do you guys think?

In a normal year with fans in attendance, that wall is there and comes into play. Having the wall certainly lets more golfer go for the green in two and makes it more exciting.

It was the same for all of the players, so I don't think it was a big deal.

They put the wall up because normally that would have been bleachers every other year. They were making it equivalent to prior yrs

re: Golf Major ruined by unnecessary advertising wall
As long as it's something everyone can take advantage of, I have no problem with it. Watching it live, the only players who couldn't take advantage were the ladies who drove it into the rough. They had grown the rough pretty good so any shot in the rough had to lay up. I think that's pretty damn fair. From the tee, you know that if you get any sort of decent shot in the fairway, you could go for it. As a result, without the wall, the drive would have been fairly meaningless as virtually everyone would have had to lay up.
