Golf and back problems?

How many of you recreational guys here have put down the clubs? My rock bottom was at Top Golf I was only chipping to the first targets and working my way up to full pitches for my then 10 year old sons birthday. Zero alcohol was involved. No drunken courage or trying to smash a driver first thing on a Sunday morning. I hit several chips and worked up to pitching to the 2nd tier targets.
All this to say that I have put the clubs down. I miss it. I AM overweight but no whale. Just a dad bod. Working on the weight. And working on stretches and walking, as well as an MRI and scheduling follow up with a neuro-surgeon. Not really for surgery but for other options and opinions.
Any of you successfully came back to your previous slightly better than a hacker golf games?
Or is it time to move up to the senior tees and graphite shafts in all the irons, and hybrid woods from the 5-iron down?

Is there a specific injury?
Height and weight?
Aside from walking what is your fitness routine?
Have you tried swimming?

T12-L1 herniation.
Lumbar spine has too many to mention. Degenerative disease, multiple herniations and scattered nerve root stenosis and cord stenosis with more discs bulging. Even an old healing fracture of a vertebral body. Possibly that Top Golf swing. I've tweaked my back plenty of times.

Walking.. Lifting is out also right now. Looking into yoga and stretches and swimming is possible.
Have a bicuspid aortic valve with mild aortic root enlargement that I'd like to keep mild. Heavy isometric exercise are a no-no due to increasing thoracic pressure.

Always.
DJ carries a 7 wood.
Many people don’t carry a 2, 3, or 4 iron in their bag.
Some sets are all hybrids now.

Brother I feel for you, I have had my share of back issues.
I am currently getting Radio-frequency Abalation procedures and they have worked great.
The Pain Doctor burns the nerves around the area that bothers you and I have had it last up to 2.5 years.
It's a quick outpatient procedure with zero side effects. I usually get relief in a few days.
You might want to check it out before going under the knife.
Not sure where your located, but in the Houston area there is only one doctor that I would let touch my spine.

L3 and L4 herniated discs. Flared up 3 wks ago and could barely walk w sciatica.
Injection and laid off clubs for 2 wks. Still not right but played 9 holes yesterday w a cart.
Lots of stretching and Doans.
Sucks

Hou Lawyer, your a perfect candidate for RFA procedure if you don't get better. I have the same issues with L3 & L4.
Injections and physical therapy don't work from me at all. RFA is painless with no side effects.
The Doc basically stick a needle to the affected nerves, turns the machine on and literally burns them which stops all pain.
The nerves regenerate in about 12-15 months.
I actually broke a vertebrae playing golf in my neck on the RTJ Trail.
I had to have a spinal fusion done with a cadaver bone. Been 20 years with no issues.

Haven’t heard of RFA except for kidney stones. Looks interesting and will mention on my follow up this wk.

I was that exact height and weight 4 months ago. I’ve dropped 40lbs and feel amazing.
Also, herniated disks are serious. Get your health in order before you keep swinging. I know it sucks, but you need to live to see your grandkids.

Stay on top of that. Again, drop lbs. switch to a low carb diet. You’ll feel amazing and inflammation will go down significantly.

Got mine replaced in 2021.
It was leaking for years, but I got pretty bad coronary artery disease they found annual follow up 11 years after I was diagnosed with aortic insufficiency.
I never had any chest pain, heart attack, no coronary symptoms, but the cath study showed the “widow maker” lesion in the left antierior descending artery.
I started playing golf 7 weeks after surgery. The good news is I was not the best player in the world before surgery so the adjustment to being even more mediocre afterwards has not been that difficult.

Chappy what’s your routine? Low carb and exercise? 40 lbs is awesome

Blew out L5-L6, my surgeon said I was one of these weird people with 6 lumbar vertebrae.
That was almost 30 years ago, my wife calls me James Spine since I can tell you a couple days before it hits when bad weather is coming.
I’ve had to quit 2 rounds since surgery because of back pain, I hurt just about every day, but I’ll quit playing when they bury me.

I was taking Mounjaro shots before they clamped down. I can’t get them now. They will be available for everyone for weight loss soon.
Diet and exercise was the rest. I ate clean and made sure to hit 10k+ steps everyday.

Your situation seems a little worse than mine. Basically bad swing habits were exacerbating my back problems. But if you're in the BR area and looking to improve your swing and help your back, go get some lessons from Paxton at pelican point. He helped my back problems (stemming from golf swing) and I know a couple other folks he helped too.

start working on your core. a few years ago, i hurt my back in the gym and golf would continue to reinjury it. I had to do a week or two of daily yoga to stretch the lower back pain out.
doing 5-10 minute core classes on youtube a few days a week and plenty of planks saved me

I'm 36 and have had two back surgeries. A ruptured disc and degenerative discs. My back hurts every single day and twice as much the day after a round.
After each surgery I went about two years without playing, which drove me nuts. I've played quite a bit ever since I was 13 so it was tough.
I know that my back will never be the same but I hold out hope my game can get back to the 2-4 handicap I maintained for a long time. But considering my injures, I don't beat myself up about it and I still pretty much always shoot under 80.
I'm 6'1, 185. I know that if I put on even 5 pounds or keep the same weight but lose muscle, it is harder on my back. But stretching and core strength is the biggest thing for my back. If I go a while without stretching, my back hurts more and my game suffers. I would highly suggest stretching more, you can be overweight and still have good flexibility which will help your back and your game. Not just flexing for 3 minutes before swinging the club, but stretching for 30 minutes at home as many nights a week that you can. it's not fun at all, but just do it while you're watching TV, you'll be glad you did and will notice results fairly quickly.
