what is there to show on his channel from tournament play that is missing from just watching the actual coverage?
What players do you normally see when you watch a televised PGA event? Players at the top, middle or bottom of the leaderboard? If Grant is as horrible as you say he is, would he even get ANY coverage? So, if he isn't going to get any coverage, except from one of his crew filming, why play?

Well he just shot +6 over two days at Royal Portrush.
Have you watched his other "major cut series" rounds? They're not even playing these courses in tournament conditions and he's shotting big numbers. He shot +22 at Oakmont over 2 days, +8 at Valhalla, +8 at Whistling Straits, +11 at Kiawah, +9 at Erin Hills, +6 at Chambers Bay, and +11 at Bethpage. And for reference, Wesley, who struggles to make cuts at opposite field events, has only missed I believe 1 cut in that series (Oakmont). Wesley actually shot 3 shots better than the lowest score in the major on one of the courses they played.
I don't think Grant is "terrible" if we're comparing him to a normal golfer, quite the opposite, but touring pros, even bad touring pros, are miles better than he is.
The cut at Portrush last time the played there was +1 and the winning score -15. It's not a very hard setup.
The Barracuda used a stableford scoring system, but the guy at the cut line last year, Scott Piercy, shot -4 over 2 days using traditional scoring. I do not think Grant can do that in a PGA event in tour conditions. I think he can do that on his channel. Wesley, who smokes Grant every time they play, missed the cut by quite a bit there at last year's event. He shot -1 over 2 rounds using traditional scoring.

You want a real answer? Grant grew up playing competitive golf. This is an opportunity to maybe fulfill a dream of his to play in a PGA Tour event. I probably wouldn't so much worry about how to monetize that. It's 2 days out of his life. I would think the experience alone would be priceless to him and he he wouldn't need to worry about content creation for 2 days. It's kind of in the same vein to me where Tour players (Cantlay) were bitching about not getting paid to play in the Ryder Cup. I thought that was silly too.

You basically have every argument I have instead you do it without having a dick attitude

The thing is I actually watch all of these guys on YouTube golf. I quite enjoy it. I was hoping Grant would play and would have rooted for him to do well. George making a cut 2 years ago was awesome to me. I was disappointed he chose not to but also not surprised. Idk, maybe him being so close to Phil there was some play for him doing this because he’s played in other pga sponsored events like the creators classic (twice, winning one at sawgrass) where he didn’t bring his own film crew.

So he was 5 off the cut line. Care to name any other major tour players that missed the cut? He most likely wouldn't make the cut due to his putting, but he can hit shots with anyone. It wouldn't be impossible for him to make it.

Yes he was 5 off the cut line playing at a course that won’t be the same setup the pros play. Have you ever watched him play actual pros in his 1v1 videos? He gives himself a 5 shot advantage in all of them. And that’s just for 1 round. His matches against Garrett Clark and Micah are always close. Micah finished DFL in a Canadian Tour event

But the ONLY reason he got an invite is his Youtube exposure and his followers. Grant seems to be doing better financially than some of the bottom journeymen pros. If he can't share his experience with the people who made him what he is, why do it at all? I mean he plays golf pretty much every day, and at most places, no one like myself will ever get to play. I would be content with that.

It was actually a LONGER setup and 5 days prior to the OPEN. How much could it change?

You just described George Bryan and he made a different choice under the same conditions

But George actually got paired with Wesley for his two rounds. I think his aspirations may be a little different than Grants because of his brother.

It was released 5 days prior, not played 5 days prior. A lot can change in a golf course over 2-3 weeks. They also had basically ideal weather both rounds fwiw
I mean I honestly don’t know why we’re arguing about whether a YouTube golfer could be competitive in a Tour event. Grant wasn’t even a good college golfer, so what are we really debating here? George at least had status at one point and was an AA in college at South Carolina. Grant played DII at Palm Beach Atlantic. His scoring avg as a senior was 73.8 and only played in 3 events

So this is where I kind of get a "yeah okay sure" feeling when they do these type videos.
They go and play these courses a week or two before the tournament, and call themselves playing it as close to tournament conditions as possible.... Yeah, okay sure... But I kind of feel like in Major Championship Golf, they're grooming these courses months in advance to get to the point of okay, it's Monday of the tournament, let's ramp it up a little for the practice rounds, then on Wednesday they say alright let's go, and that's when they hardcore break out the green rollers, and start cutting fringe, fairways, and rough to exact specifications.
See Oakmont on Wednesday with the army of push mowers and all of those green rollers hauling arse in the background of "Live From".
They're doing these cutline videos on courses that are still a week or more away from being tournament conditions. That week or two pre tournament matters a lot with modern agronomy and mechanization.

Bingo. Wesley always makes the cut very comfortably in all these, yet struggles to do so in real tournaments (never has in a major). George makes most of them too. You have to take their scores with a grain of salt. It’s still an entertaining series but trying to compare it to the actual tournament is not smart

Not in his first exemption he didn’t. That was last year. George has played in 3 Tour events the past 2 years. He was over the moon just getting invited the first time when he made the cut in 2023. I don’t think Grant has any actual interest in competing in a PGA event, which has been my contention this entire thread. If he did, filming it for YouTube wouldn’t matter. I want to say Garrett has been loosely offered in the past to play in an event but he said he knew he wasn’t good enough and didn’t want to embarrass himself. I think deep down Grant feels the same way.

You need to go back and watch. George says they played 5 days before the Open. The course was actually closed and they were the only 3 playing. Doesn't really matter that much, other than Grant shooting 1 over the 2nd day.

The video was released on Sunday. The tournament starts tomorrow. They didn’t film, edit and release the video in the same day

I guess you can call them liars as well, if that's your take. George says it's five days and Grant reiterates that it's the closest, timeframe wise, that they've filmed one to the actual competition.

I mean I don’t doubt they said that but their math isn’t mathing. If it released around noon on Sunday…how is it even possible? Maybe 5 days before practice rounds started.
