Crowds at Doral

Johnson Wagner in this interview re-iterates what many said on this board about the crowds at Doral...they were putrid all week. He brings up several reasons why and criticizes the nature of signature events as a whole.
He cuts Rolapp a break, but I wouldn't. Doral is everything Rolapp wants the tour to be...small field, big city, big artificial event, to hell with any other consideration. That's the future of the PGA Tour if Rolapp gets his way. More crap like Doral, less awesome like the Heritage was.

I think Rolapp does get a pass IN THIS INSTANCE. I'd imagine they were a good ways down the road to getting this on the schedule when he came on board last summer.
And Rolapp doesn't want the tour to be small fields. They're going to expand the field and have cuts in the Tier 1 events (currently called signature events) going forward.
Now, it's definitely his job to see what went on and hopefully reevaluate his stance on getting into big markets just to get into big markets.

Eh, i think it takes more than 1 year. It was a bad call to do it same weekend as F1.
I’m sure LIV crowd wasn’t great in 2022, but they did well last year. Seemingly much better than Cadillac did

I tried this thread already and for some reason it’s met with heads in the sand. The tv ratings were also putrid for Doral. It was an abject failure

As someone else mentioned, Rolapp has said he wants full field events with cuts. Also, he has mentioned scarcity quite a bit. I think that is the biggest issue with Signature Events at the moment. In a 6 week span, they are going to have 2 majors and 3 signature events. That is way too many. Even the golfers, who have a chance to make crazy money, are skipping events. Really, if the PGA is going to stay in May, they should have 1 signature event between the Masters and the PGA. It will feel like a much bigger deal than the current 3. Also, it may give some smaller events a chance at better fields with big time players wanting to stay sharp regardless of the purse.

I don’t find the actual golf course as interesting. I’m not sure why that is, but it just is. Someone on here made a remark about all the flat Florida courses with a bunch of water blending together and I think that is definitely true. There was also quite a bit of hype about how hard it was when that didn’t really play out in reality. The awful atmosphere also doesn’t help.
I think you can have good atmospheres in big metro areas, we can go through and find examples, but they need be more thoughtful about the timing of them

This was a great example of the problems caused by equipment technology. They did a renovation to make it more difficult due to players hitting the ball longer in 2016. That renovation is already out of date.

My big concern is that Rolapp has been listening to Tiger too much. I worry that he will create a schedule with a limited number of tier 1 events because that's the kind of schedule Tiger preferred. One of the things LIV has shown is that a smaller schedule harms the quality of the golf, and not everyone wants to play less golf. Those guys went to LIV.

This is true, but its because they created the signature event concept after the schedule was done. It doesn't work. There should be no more than 1 signature event a month, spaced evenly between majors. Moving the PGA back to August would help greatly, but that's out of their control.

Yeah, but only one guy beat it that way. Cam was -19. Scottie was second at -13. Only 8 guys were double digits under par and 13 guys were Even par or worse. Other than Cam, the course held up to the modern pros.

I think that is their plan. The golfers playing in the biggest PGA events can still play in the lower ones if they want to. There will be plenty of guys playing in those due to need for reps, sponsor considerations, local ties, etc.
They should "follow LIV" in that they make the big events extremely detrimental to skip and keep the events sparse.

That I agree with 100%. However, they should also make it easier for the top guys to play whichever lower events they wish to play, instead of doing what they did to Zurich...sandwiching it in such a bad spot that no top player in their right mind would choose to play there (unless they wanted to get their brother a tour card). That's why the signatures need to be spread out more so they can still promote their other events.

They get away with Harbour Town right after Augusta because of proximity, and it's a well run and historic tournament. It's typically a great encore to the Masters. But Doral - Quail - PGA on consecutive weeks was such a bad idea.
Doral should have been 6 weeks ago in place of one of the lesser Florida or Texas events. I think LIV's high water mark in the US was when they went to Doral the week before the Masters last year.
Truist should be a better tournament this weekend. It's supposed to rain tonight, so they'll probably start late tomorrow, and they may run up against a little weather late Sunday, but it will be nice temps and Charlotte will turn out fine.

As others have said, I think there wasn't a lot they could do. The schedules get set in advance, they have to make this Signature Event thing on the fly and have sponsors agree to increased purses, and they are left with this weird schedule. That is why they have to start over to make it all work.

For sure. They don't have to blow it completely up, but there are handful of common sense changes they can make to have the schedule flow better that would still produce some really compelling tournaments.

I know its early in his tenure, but I don't really care for Rolapp. I know he's got a nice resume and he's beholden to SSG. But I sure hope he doesn't try to mimic the NFL with his vision. The NFL model isn't a good fit for pro golf.

1. Doral stinks. It's just not a good golf course. There are maybe 5 memorable holes.
2. 2nd signature event of 3 in the midst of two majors. Truly a horrendous scheduling decision by the Tour.
3. No Rory, Fitz, Aberg, Bobby Mac, or Xander
4. Same weekend as F1 which seems like an asinine decision
5. The tournament stunk. Not close at any point on the weekend.

1. 5 memorable holes is 4 more than most tour courses have.
2. This would affect TV ratings, not attendance.
3. True.
4. True.
5. That may account for Sunday, but does not explain Thursday.
