Best shop in Houston is Impact Precision on the Northside close to Top Golf. But for his age , you should just take him to PGA Tour Superstore or Golf Galaxy.

The "free upgrade" shafts from the manufactures are often not the same as the one you would get from Club Champion or similar fitters/club builders. If looking to source cheaper components I would try Dallas golf website.

Lots of people playing Taylor Made drivers with a Ventus shaft that is not the premium model with velocore

Took my son for a fitting at CC. They were great! $100 whole bag fitting with the stipulation you have to buy at least 1 club and the $100 went towards the cost. We went through the whole bag, he must have hit 500 golf balls. After we were done, we purchased a putter for $250 and he gave us the specs for the rest of the clubs he was fitted for. Took this to my nephew who is a club pro at a CC and he got us cost plus 10% for the rest of the clubs. Saved over $1000. Got fitted a gain a couple years later for irons and got into Ping Blueprint S, retail $1599. He now works at the CC here in town and got them at cost for $950. There is a lot of markup in clubs.

You’re going to spend double what you would buying them anywhere else.

I’d say

1. Driver
2. Irons
3. Putter/Wedges

Putter/Wedges

I base it mostly on mats versus grass.

Wedges need versatility. Hard to do on a mat.

Putter requires a lot of personal experience on putting green.

I do agree that putter and wedges are absolutely crucial.

I find them to be the absolute worse and king of upgrades - depends on who you get I suppose - but they are trained to tell you the stock shafts for Titelist are crap (that’s nonsense) and sucker you into a shaft that was from a mineral core in Antarctica … great fitters at PGA Superstore or other local places - go to nicest club and get recommendations on club fitters

they are selling you a $1,000+ driver for almost $1,200 if you buy the puring.

You're leaving out the part where most OEMs will offer plenty of those premium shafts at a discount.

Also their quotes on raw shafts are always above what you would pay ordering the shaft from one of a dozen reputable vendors.
