It’s really not a “whose choke was worse” though. They all choked
They both choked for sure, but Rahm’s was something you don’t ever really see. He had a six shot lead over Sheffler and lost by 4 strokes and didn’t even make the podium. That is really unheard of at this level of play.

Yes a 39 on the back nine compared to Scheffler’s 29 will do it, but saying a “6 shot lead over Scheffler” is a little misleading.
His 4 shot lead was gone in 2 holes when he bogeyed 11 & 12 while Fleetwood birdied both

A 4 over back 9 with a 4 shot lead is a huge choke. There’s just no other way of putting it. He was already at -20 after 10 which would have won the thing.

I have not denied once that it was a huge choke
Correct & 3 holes later he was tied with Fleetwood at -18

Rahm was -2400 after the 10th hole
Anyway to know if they had odds for him to make the podium? The fact he didn’t even medal is even more mind blowing.

Epic choke job, makes McIllroy's US Open pale in comparison.
No way. As good as these Olympics were, it's still not the US Open for the players. Every one of them would take a US Open over a medal, especially Rory. I mean Rory's choke was so bad he had to step away from golf for a bit.
This was a bad choke no doubt, but as far as what was riding on the win, Rory's hurt worse.

It was more emotional for Rory because of the situation. That was specific to him. People have choked worse in majors and not broke down like he did afterwards. From a simple fall-apart standpoint, Rahms was way worse. Bigger lead and bigger fall. Rory missed a couple putts. Rahm just straight up fell apart.

Rory essentially had a 1 shot lead with 4 holes to go. That gets lost all the time
Rahm had a 4 shot lead with 8 to go and lost by 4

Yea I mean I agree with all of that. I'm just meaning from a "what matters more" type view. The Olympics are only in their 2nd installment and I hope it continues to get better and better and mean more, and hopefully the fields expanding in some way. But the US Open is the US Open, and Rory hasn't won a major in over 10 years. It was huge, and he had in in the bag and lost it in a pretty horrible way.
Rahm fell apart in a bigger way, but Rory's was even later in the round (we knew Rahm was toast by 14?) which makes it sting more, on two short putts, and a bigger tournament
I mean Chamblee would probably pay money to be able to suck Rory off and he despises Rahm, and even he said it was basically on par with Rory's. I can see someone putting it on par with Rory, but I can't really see putting it above Rory's. I'd have it just below.

Of course, but the narrative here is let’s say the LIV golfer had the worst choke ever
They literally celebrated him when he won the 2023 Masters and another LIV Golfer choked.
Professional golf needs to figure out & get back together more than 4 times/yr so we can get past the bull shite.
Unfortunately I have no idea what’s going on with the PGA/PIF stuff & I’m less confident it will “fix” things.

quote:I didn’t say shite about LIV. If anything you bringing it up is more of an obsession than anything else. Rahm’s meltown was on a national stage against the very best in the world. The leaderboard was stacked and he had a huge lead with 8 to play. He finishes those at even par and he wins where everyone else torched those holes. LIV has zero to do with it.

Neither was an all time choke job.
Norman at Augusta, Van de Velde at Carnoustie, and Phil at Merion come to mind. Roberto DiVincenzo signing an improper scorecard after winning the Masters in 1968 also is up there. Retief Goosen's crowd pleasing 81 at Pinehurst in 2005 when he was a 3 stroke lead to begin the day comes to mind as well.
