Cam Smith trying to store the Claret Jug in an overhead bin. Why are guys leaving for LIV? I bet the Tour brass flew home private. The champ is on a commercial flight.

Cam is a down to earth guy.

He said in a recent interview that he is more comfortable having a beer with the caddies than his playing peers.

He loves to mow his own grass and he likes hanging out with course superintendents and playing around with the equipment.

I don’t understand why several of these guys don’t go in together a charter a PJ. Their team can fly commercial, but imagine if they lost Cam’s putter. I know they lost Hovland’s clubs.

Pretty common when they’re flying international. See morikawa last year after the open or hideki last year after the masters (returning to Japan.)

Private international flights are very expensive and in some cases (although not typically between Europe) it will require the plane to make refueling stops. Tiger flew commercial a few years back to the tournament in Dubai so he wouldn’t have to stop.

He likely already had the first class ticket booked and had no interest in trying to line up a PJ or paying the extra 50k+ for it.

Let’s say a PJ is $200k (I doubt it is) get 10 players from South FL to all pitch in. At least you know your clubs are with you.

Dave Portnoy said a plane from New York to Dan Diego was 100k like 6 months ago. I'm not sure $200k is that far off

Some of them do that. Tiger definitely does. A bunch of them are sponsored by Netjets too. I'd imagine they get a good deal.

It's possible that Cam would have planned to go back with one of those groups but he may have had to stay due to all the extra required engagements.

(Is Cam Smith not a netjets sponsored guy?)

Well then I gotta think he had his reasons why he made a decision to fly commercial. Seems dumb to me though.

They probably do at times but these guys are also on their own schedule. Some went early for the jp mcmanus, some for the Scottish, and some just for the open.

Pure speculation but I’d guess the quickest and most sensible way for cam to get back to jax at that point was on the commercial flight.

Outside of the top few guys, they often fly commercial.

10 guys is a lot of weight and would require 2 stops to Dubai. If flying from Orlando or Jupiter, stop in Frankfurt and then in Turkey. You’d need to fly a G550 or 8500 (heavy jet) and 3 pilots.

About $1m round trip. Includes cost of accommodations for pilots at layover (Dubai). I pulled up our flight charts and mapped out the route, est fuel burn, and per hour fees for a 550 x3 pilots.

Probably a lot more than that for a PJ to Dubai

Image (from Golf Magazine) of golf bags in the Scotland Airport after The Open Championship. I’d say a flight on a private jet would be worth the price.
