I'm tossing around the idea of taking my 5 year old daughter this afternoon to play 9. I've got her some clubs and all. Might be time.

Heck yeah. Bring some crackers to crush up and feed to the fish. My daughter loved doing that.

You absolutely can’t beat playing golf with your Dad or your kids.
I join my dad and his 3 brothers every year for a golf trip. Great way to bond.

I took my daughter, now 24 (no pics), to the course a few times when she was 3 and the course had temporary greens, so we were the only ones out there. She would sit in the cart while I hit, and it went something like this:
Me: takes a practice swing
She: "You missed it!"
Me: Hah, that's pretty funny. Oh, well. Concentrate now. Takes another practice swing.
She: "You missed it again!"
Me: Okay, not as funny that time. Oh well, let's just get good posture, think of your 3 swing thoughts, get ready to pull the trigger, and ..........
She: "HIT IT!!!! HIT IT!!! HIT THE BALL!!!"
I'm now happy to report that I've taken my daughter's advice, and I'm a much faster golfer. AND I can swing with a foghorn going off without being bothered.

Chap, what clubs does your kid game?
Mine is 5 and bigger for her age and she has plastic clubs. I think she'd do better with something that has some weight but idk if she is ready for real clubs.

Get the US Kids set which is tailored by height. Comes with putter, driver, wedge, 7i, and 5 wood/hybrid. At least the yellow 42” set does.

quote:5 is definitely old enough for real clubs and most kids’ sets are measured by height. My boys have Top Flite sets, which are great. Mine are pretty y’all for their ages but my youngest turned 4 last week and has the <45” set which comes with driver, 7i, and putter. My 6-year old has the 46-52” set which has driver, hybrid, 7i, sw, and putter. Both sets, with the bag, were a little over $100.

US Kids golf is also a good set but twice as expensive. Their clubs are marketed as being much lighter, which is important for kids, but the weight specs between them and Top Flite is nearly non-existent.

I’ve taken my son (just turned 3 this past week) twice - first time a short course. Let him hit off tee, pick up and putt. He made all 18 holes. 2nd time was a big course. Made it 8 holes - he really enjoyed the bunkers and after raking for 5 minutes i decided that was enough for the day.

Her clubs should be in today, in time for her birthday next month. Went with the top flites in teal.
We went to the course the day after I asked this question and she broke her club because she hit a real ball with a plastic club. So a new set was definitely needed.

I got a hand me down US Kids set. She only brings the driver and putter to the course. Right now, I’m getting to play the dogfight, bc all she cares to do is drive, ride the cart, and pick flowers. Life is good.

That's great stuff man... get them out there early and often.. I have two daughters - now 9 and 11 and both are Top 50 golfers in the world for their ages (USKids)... My older one just started playing form the forward tees.. and she shot a 37 with 3 birdies...
It's so great to hear stories about fathers taking their daughters to the golf course and being so involved in their lives.. It's been such a great experience for us and what the get to do with what they love... Good luck and keep it up!

Wow! That’s awesome.
Can you detail what you did at which age with them? What was the progression?

Thanks Bud....
If you have instagram you can actually go to my account RCRoy45 and check out how the girls have progressed over the years...
In terms of getting started - and let me be clear - I never had any ideas of them being golfers... I always thought they would play softball and or basketball - I happened to take my older daughter to the driving range just to get her out of mama's hair for a bit on a Saturday... and she took a swing... and had a very advanced swing. I am not a great golfer by any means.. 18-20 handicap...
They did have a little set of clubs at 18/24 months - here is what I have found as I know many of the top 20/30 girls parents... just hanging out with them...
1. Nearly all of the girls did Tae Kwan Doe by age 5/6... I happened to do that because I wanted my girls to be able to break a piece of wood... but the forms they have to learn to progress through the belts require the same type of physical concentration that learning a really good golf swing does
2. me personally - they did very very little putting before age 6... they just worked on swing (I did it on my own till age 5.5 when my oldest started with an instructor - on the first trip to the world championships.. she was hitting every green.. but 3/4 putting... which set the wifey off.. but I said short term pain long term gain.. some kids just do putting.. and they can roll the ball around the course and score... but long term.. it's not really golf.. now the short game has improved.. and the long game is really there...
3. NEVER NEVER start them in a group class.. always 1x1 or 2x1 (they did joint lessons as sisters and still do them with their coach.. but we split the time)... the reason never to start the group class... is the golf swing is highly individual and they need the 1x1 focus.. in a group unless they are really special.. they will lose interest quickly and get frustrated
they compete in the DC USKids tour which is pretty competitive... but they should start tournaments around age 6/7.... and if they like it.... they will adapt pretty quickly... some parents are absolutely nuts.. you just have to focus on your own.. and you'll do great..
here are swing videos when they were pretty little... let me know if I can assist further... it's been such a great and unexpected journey

You know Maeve is on the wrong side of the ball, huh?
Glad to hear your thoughts. I don't expect mine to be great at golf, but seeing how to do it and not do it is still great info.

Haha - she’s a trip - she added a The to her name at age 3 and has been The Maeve ever since - she’s 3x player of the year for USKids in DC and has a John McEnroe swagger which I have no idea where that came from - if she can avoid being sent to boarding school at age 9 she will be dangerous haha
