Business Report Article

quote:

Rounds of golf played at BREC’s six courses in 2018 remained relatively flat compared to rounds played in 2017, dropping 0.8%. In all, 111,374 rounds of golf were played on BREC courses in 2018, down 903 rounds from the 112,277 played in 2017, according to a BREC golf report.

That's consistency.

quote:

Dumas—an 18-hole course—had just 12,134 rounds played in 2018, far fewer than the other 18-hole courses in the BREC system. J.S. Clark—a 9-hole tract—had 3,518 rounds played, while the other 9-hole course, City Park, had 9,131 rounds played.

Paging Lsu13Lsu

Ranking by play:

SM
BC
Webb
CP
Dumas
Clark

I'd love to see the actual numbers. Cash in, expenses, overhead, etc.

They need to close courses. An independent study agrees with that.

My vote would be Clark and City Park.

The right answer would be to close Dumas too but it’ll never happen politically.

For BR Business Report to leave out dollars it must be really bad. They don’t like to make EBR look like a bad place to live and do business.

Closing courses is a bad idea. Valuing memberships is what they need to do.

A course that does only 3,000 rounds right next to a course that does only 12,000 rounds and both need to be open? Haha. Yeah. Memberships would help those courses.

A study agrees that courses need to close they just cannot close Dumas and Clark down. I do think Clark’s days are numbered.

I played Dumas some when I had more afternoon time. It's not a bad course. The conditions can just be terrible. But. It's in baker.

People in Zachary would prefer to play beaver. People in BR proper or farther south wouldn't drive up to Dumas, with Webb, lsu, SM, etc.

I've only ever played city park once and may never play Clark. I use clark's range sometimes. That's about it.

Played BC yesterday. Have no idea WTF they're doing out there, but the greens looked like shite, a few tee boxes have NO grass... just dirt. And the Club House decided to let a group of children have a bday party out there. Took us 6 hours to play.

ETA: could've played the Island for same price, had better greens to putt on, and nicer facilities.

I learned how to play golf at City Park and had my first ace on #1....course needs to be closed. Dumas needs to be closed. Invest the difference in making Clark a quality First Tee complex and cart girls at SM and BC.

I'm for more BREC courses, but that is based on my assumption that they are all breaking even. I'd love to see a balance sheet, etc.

If City Park breaks even or even makes a little money compared to what they spend, I don't see how closing it is a good option. If it is closed, it becomes a big open space park, which is cool, I guess. But someone is going to have to pay to cut that grass, and there isn't any way to charge anyone for using it. So it, like most of the BREC parks, will be running at a loss.

It's tough to make any assertions without the full facts.

The last time they presented dollars none were breaking even and it doesn't appear things are trending up and they seem to be spending more money at the courses lately.

An independent study that BREC paid for said to close courses.

How close were they to even? Is it comparable to what a green space would lose?

Only CP and SM were close enough to cover that. The rest were really really bad.

I wouldn't say any were close to break-even. SM could get there if they raised prices and added a Marshal to ensure rounds didn't take 6 hours. SM is worth more than what they charge and they could easily charge more with a working Marshal system.

I will guarantee you they don't want to release dollar figures because the last time they did it wasn't pretty for them.

I think they updated the clubhouse area that year. I could be wrong on that.
