Brandel Chamblee expresses concern PGA Tour star is open to idea of joining LIV

On Wednesday afternoon, Phil Mickelson said that more players from the PGA Tour and DP World Tour will be joining LIV Golf.
“But the reality is, I’ve been fielding calls, as we all have, from players that are free agents to PGA Tour players to DP World Tour players that want to come over,” Mickelson said. “You know, the spot’s probably going to be filled by the time the qualifying tournament is here.”
Wednesday night, Golf Channel’s Brandel Chamblee was asked on X if he believes more stars will join LIV and expressed that his major concern is Jon Rahm.
“It’s inevitable others will join, as I don’t think the money/temptation will go away, but there are very few stars that truly make a difference; such as Tiger and Rory and even Rahm… Rahm worries me a bit as he seems open to the idea, but I sense that his deep knowledge of the history of the game and his obvious future place in it will keep him from selling out. I hope that’s the case.” Brandel Chamblee Twitter

I just noticed that almost every big name on the PGA Tour has confirmed they will participate in this new TGL series. I assumed that meant they are committed to PGA Tour, but maybe not.

Some notable guys not participating are Scheffler, Burns, Spieth, Hideki, Finau

TGL seems like the dumbest shite ever.
It’s boring enough watching week in/week out real golf. Simulator golf sounds fricking awful.

Not just Phil but Ian Poulter said the same thing.
“I am not going to give any names, but we’ve been contacted about players wanting to join,” Poulter said on Wednesday ahead of LIV’s $50m Team Championship finale at Trump Doral in Miami.
“And that’s no surprise. Think about it, they’ll probably get fined, but if a player takes that chance, pays say $50,000 or whatever, then he makes it into the top three then he will earn minimum $1.75 million in 14 events in 2024. That’s minimum. Even if they shoot level 80s every week.
“It’s $20 million purses and then the prizes from the team events on top and you’re playing against the likes of Brooks [Koepka], DJ [Dustin Johnson], Cam [Smith], Talor [Gooch] every week? If you’re on the DP World Tour then you’d be mad not to back yourself and have a go. It’s a different level.”

I'm curious, is anyone here loyal LIV Golf watchers all 3 days ?
Honestly I forget it is even on.

I’ve maybe watched 10 minutes of coverage since they’ve been on the CW.
But as long as guys like Taylor Gooch have a chance at being the highest paid golfer in the world. Making $14M more than Scotty Sheffler, and $35M total. LIV wil continue to get players. Even if the audience goes to zero.

Your right about that.
Who would have ever thought that Gooch would be the star of LIV.
Or at least the best golfer.

A lot of people thought he was a future star, including the LIV tour.
He is a good player. Would have gave us more than Fowler did in Rome.

I would be very surprised if Rahm went. I could see Xander and Cantlay going though. Although, in my opinion, that would not be a huge loss for the tour.

I don’t even know if I get the CW on YouTubeTV.

I can’t imagine watching that.

Don’t forget where golf was before tiger came around. Saudis have the money printer running and plenty of gas to support it. I have a feeling things will be changing end of this season (2024) into 2025. Re: major broadcasting deal etc

I agree. I get bored hitting on a simulator. I get bored at Top Golf. This idea shows how disconnected sports stars are with their target audiences. Even The Matches are boring to watch.

Gooch made $9.2 million in 2022 on the PGA Tour.
In 2023 so far he has made $38 million with the ability to add another $16 million if he wins this weekend.

One would think with all of that money he wouldn’t be such a whiny bitch.

The matches were fun when you thought there was some bad blood between the players

Maybe golfers start defecting, but last year the rumors were that Xander and Cantlay were leaving and LIV had a TV deal with FOX in place. None of those things happened. The big difference this year is all the unknown created by the framework agreement.

Those two are basically milquetoast and they don't move the needle.
