"Stop thinking and just knock it in the fricking hole."

I've made the couple putts looking at the whole. Far from comfortable.
Oh it wasn't for me at first either. But I couldn't get over just how many putts I was confidently holing, and how close my lags were from distances. Like any change, it took a bunch of time on the putting green to get used to.

I went through almost a 6 month stretch where I was fricking miserable with the putter. I wouldn't even use my putter. I would walk up with my wedge and putt. It sucked. No advice just telling you it happens. Just kept going and it came back.

keep your head down 1-2 seconds longer than you normally would after contact.... worked wonders for me

I think it was Gary Player that said this but, when on the practice putting green:
Don't just putt. Play this game instead.
Walk onto the green -5 in your head.
Start putting from all over the place.
1 putt = birdie
2 putt = par
3 putt = bogie
Don't leave the practice green until you are back to -5 or better.

Putted well today. Think my issue was having the ball to far up in my stance and was having to reach to hit the ball causing inconsistencies. Sounds simple but never noticed till a buddy pointed it out. Golf is now fun again!

Switch to the saw/claw/pencil grip. Your inconsistency says you're breaking your right wrist through impact.
My best drill on the practice green is as follows:
Bring five balls and place them in a line going away from the hole at two foot intervals. Place the little flag 18 inches behind the cup.
Try to make them obviously, but have them all stop before hitting the flag. Do this drill in a clock pattern all the way around the cup so you get uphill downhill left and right breaking putts. Your speed will be great all day when you get good at this drill. If your speed is good, your three putts will decrease.

Inconsistency especially on shorter putts like you describe may well be due to decelerating at impact because of too much backswing
Shorten the backstroke and accelerate into the back of the ball
Think Brandt Snedeker !
TIP:
Pretend there is a thumbtack barely stuck in the back of the ball at the impact point.
Drive the tack into the ball.
Im having putting issues as well. Im gonna try your advice on my round tomorrow and see if it works.

When I am struggling with the putter I go back to the first and best putting tip I ever got.
Just like a grandfather clock. Straight back straight through and on the same tempo.

If you typically leave a put short, I suggest counter balancing. Will lighten the head feel but make the putter heavier for consistency sake.
I recently bought a center shafted putter to help with consistent center hits and that has helped alot. Then even more recently, I switched to RH higher than left hand on the grip (i am a righty). Barely missed any within 8 ft last round.

I don't mind saying that I'm a pretty decent putter. The best tip I ever heard was stand a couple of feet behind the ball and visualize the line you want to take. When you do that, pick out a tangible spot on the green (a speck or a few blades of grass) two or three feet down that line. Aim to putt the ball over that spot. (Of course use the speed to get the ball to hole). This will help you keep your putts online and they really come in handy with the <10 ft putts.
A drill I use on the practice green is I play a little game against myself. I use 3 balls and pick a hole at least 15 feet away. If I can get all three balls into the hole without three putting, I move onto the next hole. If I end up three putting, I start over. Goal is to go 5 straight holes without a 3 putt. Helps put a little pressure on myself while practicing.

"Imagine there's some hair round that hole'."

Does your course have a putting green?
Dont have your first putt be in game conditions, and pee on speed golf. Relax. Take a couple swings at a right angle to play.
Being the ball means dropping your persona. No worries.

I don't know. I've always been a good putter. It's everything else that grenades my rounds

I am a righty so I put my right index finger pointing down to the ground on the grip some old guy I played with told me to use that grip and it has done wonders for my putting. Being confident in your stroke will go along way. Also mark and walk if you are playing with a group take your time if you are uncomfortable with the putter.
