Ball in divot revisit…

Watching the PGA and Lowery hit a perfect drive and landed in a divot. Obviously no drop. Again, the dumbest rule in golf when you’re in the fairway.

After he missed his par putt, he flipped off the hole!!

They know who did not repair it properly.
Give a 5 shot penalty to whoever that was.

It sounds easy but once they say you get free relief from divots in the fairway, who determines what exactly a divot is? It would open up a massive can of worms that would be worse than just making people hit from divots. Every single shot players would be trying to argue they should get relief. The game is already slow enough.
The only real way to eliminate the issue is just a blanket rule that you can move your ball anywhere within like a one foot radius of where the ball ended up if it's in the fairway. There would be no crying about divots or arguing about what is and isn't a divot. Just move your ball an inch over and be done with it. If the whole point is being rewarded for hitting the fairway, moving the ball a few inches shouldn't make a difference.

Yep, this is the reason they'll never make this rule. Golf is a simple game. Hit your ball, find it, hit it again as it lies, repeat until it's in the hole.

Read it was a pitch mark, not a divot.

sounds like he didn't "quite" hit a perfect shot...

No way that rule ever gets changed.

Playing partners would have to agree it is in a divot. If the majority doesn’t agree then an official can be called in for the final determination.

In my mind you should be rewarded for hitting the fairway. If the ball is in a divot, pitch mark, whatever, the player should be able to take relief.
I realize it will never happen, but punishing players for hitting the fairway is genuinely one of the dumbest things in sports.

100% this
The only way this would work would just be a rule allowing you to lift clean and place in the fairway all the time.

Technically…. A divot is ground under repair- - or should be, because that is exactly what is going on. The fairway is repairing itself from the shot that removed the turf. Ive seen a mower leave rutting tracks in a fairway that was called GUR, and nothing more was happening than letting the grass heal itself.
Not only is it a dumb rule, it is illogical, hypocritical and inconsistent with the other rules of golf

Just playing devil’s advocate here, but if this is your reasoning, what should happen if you are in the rough and get a perfect lie?

Our point is that this rule could open up a can of worms where guys are trying to claim the ball is in a divot anytime they don’t have a perfect lie.

So what happens under the rules of golf when two playing partners disagree on a ruling?
You are allowed to play two balls and then talk to a rules official after play and the official makes the decision. That is literally impossible with a ball in a divot ruling.

Just snap a picture of the divot and ball. This ain’t rocket science

But I thought golf was a “gentleman’s game” so players would not try to gain an advantage unless it was legit. Leave it to the players and let them self police. Don’t golfers call penalties on themselves?
