The State Am BR Qualifier is once again at Santa Maria in 10 days. Played there this week and its not fit for that in the least. Bear spots on greens, questionable tees, and the bunkers are an absolute joke.

Why cant they move this to another course in the area? Surely UClub or CCLA could spare a Monday morning to host Championship style golf. Ellendale, Southern Trace and Bayou Desiard all host a Q round.

The non qualifiers who end up paying $200 to play that goat farm will be miffed for more than one reason.

State Am BR Qualifier

I think you're overrating the level of championship a state am qualifier is. You can always sign up for a different qualifier and travel to Lafayette or NOLA for it.

What does that have to do with a course being in terrible condition?

Why would it cost more? I've already outlined that clubs with Similar if not more expensive guest fees are a part of the Q round. Feels more like just going with the status quo.

Hell, Bayou Desiard and Southern Trace are hosting on a Saturday and Friday respectively. I've talked to the LGA guys before and they way its done is the price they pay per round doesn't vary, Every course gets the same. More likely what's happening is Santa is being over paid and providing sub par conditions.

UC and CCL have NO interest in hosting a LGA qualifier. The LGA would LOVE for them to host, but it will not happen.

The only clubs in the BR area that will host are SM, BC, Greystone, Island and maybe Copper Mill.

BC is the best option of those to me. But the qualifier location is selected by the LGA board member (or members) that are from that area. My guess is whoever is the board member from BR likely is familiar with the staff and/or course (Santa Maria). SM is more than acceptable and/or capable to host a qualifier.

I’m pretty sure the courses host those qualifiers for free. Very hard for the LGA to find courses and they basically take what they can get.

Bear spots on greens

I knew the bear population was growing, but didn’t know we had that many in BR and especially at SM.

Recent rains have them pushed up from their normal hiding spots along Bayou Manchac.

Word is years ago they mauled an old guy to death for jumping down the cart path on 5 looking for balls.

That you think the LGA is going to monitor conditions at Santa Maria for a state am qualifier and then try to move it to CCL, Uclub, or even beaver creek if conditions aren't good enough for you. It is what it is, everyone's playing the same course.

It's most likely at SM instead of Beaver Creek because they want it in Baton Rouge and not 45 minutes north of it.

This would make sense if either of the courses were in Baton Rouge.

While this week’s rain may set things back a bit, SM will be in good shape for the upcoming qualifier.
