quote:I think HL2 is a great game but it didn't do anything revolutionary in these categories outside of the physics based gameplay mechanics. I'd also argue the story isn't all that good and the game has pacing issues, specifically in regards to many of the vehicle sections. It was the best overall FPS at the time with some brilliant level design, but I don't think it's heavily influenced the industry like Mario 64 did.
HL2 is the best game ever made when it came out in terms of mechanics, level design, pace, story arc and making you feel in the moment.
As has been pointed out, this question can be approached from at least 2 perspectives. Are we talking about what game had the largest impact on gaming or what game is simply our favorite? I picked the game that blew me away at the time and completely sucked me in like no other game has, Metroid Prime. In my own personal list, Mario 64 is no where to be seen because I didn't really play it until years after its influence had spread. FWIW, Half-Life 2 is #6 on my personal list.

quote:What do you mean by this? Games like Lode Runner released years before either and came with a level editor so friends could share their custom stages. That's just one example off the top of my head.
But Mario and Zelda invented level design.

I think some of you are confusing "greatest game of all time" with "my favorite game of all time."
What these threads always become.

Well it makes sense. We'd rather talk about Chrono Trigger and Goodfellas rather than Pong and Birth of a Nation

2 of my all time favorite games are Assassin's Creed 2 and Chaos Theory, but I'm not going to say they are the greatest

Americas Army 2 patch 2.82 or 2.85 was the best FPS experience I ever had.

AC2 might have be the only AC game outside of Blackflag that i've completed. Just don't remember completing the first one, idk what happened.

The first game is basically a tech demo. Beyond looking really pretty and giving you free reign to figure out how to assassinate your targets however you want, there was barely anything to the original AC whatsoever.

Space Invaders, for the generation of developers it inspired
