I'm always amused by the wording of these XBOX press releases. It sorta sounds like they're preparing gamers for the Helix not having a disc drive

quote:

This is part of our broader commitment to game preservation. As technology, devices, and distribution continue to evolve, preserving access to the games people own matters more than ever.

Pretty surprised the Microsoft lawyers let them say "games people own..." Even for physical, people may own a disc, but they still only have a license to play the game.

quote:

We’re starting with thousands of titles, and we’ll continue to add more over time. While not every title will be available at launch, this is an important step toward a future where players can have greater confidence that the games they buy remain with them for years to come.

Presumably they mean the "discs" remain with them for years to come since people still only have a license to play the games and digital games also remain with people for years to come.

I can almost guarantee, whatever the next XBOX will be (if there is one), it will not have a disk drive.

Sony should follow suite with a similar program though.

I sure hope so. I love the convenience of digital games.

the only way i seem them winning people's hearts again is providing a disc drive to support the physical PS1-PS5 libraries.

Disc-to-Digital might be patented.

It should be telling you the opposite. This is not similar to removing disc drives. In fact, it's a feature that requires a disc drive in order to work.

You are correct. Microsoft has at least one patent for it:

Patent History
Publication number: 20220134235
Type: Application
Filed: Nov 2, 2020
Publication Date: May 5, 2022
Patent Grant number: 11571626
Applicant: Microsoft Technology Licensing, LLC (Redmond, WA)
Inventors: Tero J. PATANA (Kirkland, WA), Shuoqi S. WANG (Richmond, WA), Michael P. DUGGAN (Duval, WA)
Application Number: 17/087,264

I don't think Sony has filed patent apps for anything similar. However, they did file a patent for technology that would allow gamers to play PS1-PS5 games natively on a console, without using emulators.

I have no idea how true it is but apparently XBox can do this because they have for some time essentially embedded a unique ID within each disc, that way that can actually tie the disc to the digital "copy" granted.

Supposedly no such ID is part of any PS disc, so they can't really tie a digital copy to a physical disc.

You are correct. Here's a full explanation:

With Xbox now formally announcing their disc-to-digital program here's how I think it will work and why I think Sony cannot replicate it.

Bare with me as I'm trying to keep this fairly easy to understand, all of this is my opinion based on research and not fact. Also there's tl:dr at the bottom for those who cant read.

All discs are essentially pressed from a "master copy", but for Blu-ray specifications, there is an area at the centre hub of the disc called the BCA (Burst Cutting Area). This area is essentially space to write additional information to discs after they have been pressed.

All PlayStation and Xbox discs have information written to them. It's usually the numerical serial assigned to the game itself along with a batch number and manufacturing ID of sorts. This is one of (not all) of the methods used for telling a disc is legit.

At the start of the Xbox One generation all (or the majority at least) Xbox discs were pressed with something called a PMSN (Pre-recorded Media Serial Number), the Blu-ray specs term for a per-disc serial. Think of it as a fingerprint for a disc. All of them are different, so every Xbox copy has a completely unique identifier.

How I think the Xbox method will work is actually some leftover technology from the much hated 2013 DRM system that Microsoft were pitching with the Xbox One. That system needed every disc to have a unique identifier. So now your Xbox Series can see that unique number and say "hey this is Halo Infinite number 123456890" and assign your account the digital licence for that game.

If you lend your disc to a friend, their console sees the same thing and the Xbox system removes the licence from you and gives it to them, meaning your discs can still be traded or sold without any hassle.

Based on research I've done and testing with a few dozen games across PS4 and PS5, PlayStation discs do not have these PMSN numbers. Meaning there is no unique identifier for these discs, just the game number, batch number etc, suggesting they can't replicate this system. That isn't to say they aren't working on their own method, but personally I think it's unlikely, although I hope to be wrong.

tl:dr - Xbox discs have a unique fingerprint that means each disc can be assigned a digital license, PlayStation discs seemingly do not.

There is a 0.0% chance the Helix has a disc drive.

This move is literally to prepare people for a future with no disc drives

There is simply no evidence to support the opinion that there is a "0.0% chance the Helix has a disc drive."

I don't know about all that but damn did they win on the pricing. Both my ps5 and new xbox are digital only which I'm fine with.

That being said, I do enjoy seeing my switch 2 games in a drawer. Might sound lame to some but it made me feel like a kid again organizing my switch 1 and 2 games like NES/SNES cartridges.

I do love the Switch 2, but releasing ports of games that were released on the other consoles years ago isn't much of a win.

They definitely win the "exclusives" game though. Nobody comes close to Nintendo's first party IP.

So far, 219 delisted games work. 63% of all tested games.

Disc to digital program is now sitting at 80% compatibility. Only about 100 games still remain to be tested/verified. The link in the tweet below has the full list if anyone has physical copies of those games and wants to test them.

ETA: It appears the major holdouts from the program so far are Sega, Bandai Namco, and Square Enix.
