I don't recall them ever stating console sales as their goal. Seems they've been trying to expand from consoles for quite a while now actually.

so we've gone from "you dont spend $70B to not make the games exclusive" to "well console sales were never the real goal"

They've been forced into adopting this position because of market conditions. They wouldn't be yapping about "play anywhere!" if they had sold 60M consoles.

Nah I'm playing it day one on Game Pass, and I hope it's a good game. This news will have no effect on my decision.

They're still making games exclusive. They haven't stopped. This game will be old news by the time it hits PS5. I'm more than happy for people to buy a physical copy of it on PlayStation 6 months after release. If it's good enough I'll get myself a physical copy out of the bargain bin next Christmas.

ETA: This is a Bethesda game. MS only spent $7.5B to buy Bethesda. I have no idea what the Lucasfilm license cost for this IP but that may be another factor in this decision.

I have no idea what you're talking about here. I can't find any data to support your statement. MS's gaming division saw huge revenue gains for FY 2024 and the gaming division surpassed Windows as the third largest segment of the company. What market conditions? Where are you seeing a negative outlook for MS's gaming division?

The market conditions that caused them to have half the amount of consoles sold. Easy to say "oh yeah we just want you to play everywhere" after the fact when you're getting annihilated

Play Anywhere has been touted as a feature since the XB1 was released

But why? Gamepass is the bargain bin already.
