I've logged more hours in the Diablo series than anything else I've played.. maybe even combined. I was 6 when D1 came out so I couldn't speak to the impact it had I just remember watching my dad play and him being blown away. I think I was finally "allowed" to play when the hellfire expansion came out a year or two later and the rest was history. To this day I think of the butcher when I hear the words, "fresh meat." Apparently you can buy the original for $10 and I've been tempted to grab it just for nostalgia. I doubt it holds up well but I could see it being pretty fun to play on a tablet.

Anyways, how big of a game was Diablo 1 at the time? I'm sure there were dungeon crawlers before it but did that genre blow up after?

**btw, is Diablo 4 ever going to happen?

Yes. When it's ready.

Download the D1 bezelbub HD mod. It’s a mod that enhances the graphics of the original game. It’s free. I still play D2 today. It’s the GOAT for me. D3 was and is a pile of garbage. What Blizzard did to that original Blizzard North team is one of the biggest mistakes ever.

If you’re into Diablo, Path of Exile is super fun although it may be a little too detailed for its own good

The talent tree is probably the most overwhelming thing I’ve ever seen in a game. Look up Esoro on YouTube and pick one of his starter builds and just follow what he says. Path of Building is an app that I’d recommend that will show you itemization and skills so you can just keep that up on your 2nd monitor as you play.

I remember downloading it a LONG time ago but never gave it a chance for some reason. I think I was too overwhelmed and said, "frick it." I'll have to give it another shot.

It’s very fun once you get the hang of it. Especially for a free game. I would just recommend some homework beforehand and pick an easier starter build so you have some clear direction.

Did you ever get the Hellfire expansion back in the day? If not it’s worth a playthrough. I forget exactly how to do it but there’s a YouTube video that shows how to run it on modern PCs.

There was a popular dungeon crawler that was out before D1 I think...

Can't remember the name though. I'll look around and see if I can find it.

I've played Titan Quest games. They're really good if you like the genre.

The skill tree is daunting. Hell, the game was overwhelming 7 years ago. Now you need a PHD in Dungeon Management to have any clue what is going on.

Fun game but very complex and even with build guides you can frick yourself good if you don't get the needed equipment drops.

Finally remembered...

Gauntlet.

Anyone remember that one?

Interesting. I played the first one in high school and the second one with friends in college. It was the only game I've every played online with other people. Never got into the Halo crowd, or really consoles at all other than the Nintendos of my day. I always wondered if I missed out on anything by not playing Diablo III.

The true successor to D2. Path of Exile is the most rewarding ARPG on the market if you are into these types of games. I have been playing for years and I learn new things every league.

It’s the worst of the 3 but “garbage” is a little over the top.

It has a lot of unnecessary flaws under the hood compared to the first two, but the atmosphere/story/new classes are still worth playing.

It’s definitely better now but I agree that it was a steaming pile of garbage on release. They totally lost sight of the things that made D2 great in spots. In particular, I don’t know if I’ll ever forgive them for the real money auction house.

I've enjoyed the gameplay so far. I'm just trying to get through the acts so I can see what endgame is like. I will say the reliance on overly complex systems and RNG is a little off-putting conceptually.

I would like to play through at least once more with a build I plan myself, but that may be a few leagues down the road.
