So I am upgrading both my monitor and VC (motherboard and CPU to come). I was wondering if anyone knows of the best place to get a good deal on VC's.

I am looking at getting a 27" 1440 monitor. I know it takes a beefier card to push 1440 resolution. What is the minimum that I should/could get to be able to run games at 1440 smoothly? I am looking at staying at the low end of the VC's so any advice is appreciated.

If you're going with 1440p, 7970 would be best (besides the titan, of course)

if you care about AA, high res textures, high frames, etc on 1440 you need a higher end gpu with 3 or more gb of vram. I am doing research on this right now as well, but I havent done much research on mid level gpus running medium settings at 1440. My guess is that if you are going to sink money into a 1440 monitor you wouldn't want to skimp on a gpu. Might be best to either wait until you have the money for both the monitor and a good gpu or buy the monitor now and run it at 1080 until you can make the investment in the VC.

Crap that is about 100 bucks more than i would like to spend. Would doing anything lower be not doing a 1440 justice?

Looking at getting THIS monitor. No frills but uses the same screen as the Korean imports A-.

Right now my PC monitor has kicked the bucket so I have no monitor at all. I also only have a 5750 as my VC.

Does running at 1080 on a 1440 look like crap? Like watching standard signal tv on a HDTV?

lol no worse than 1080 on a 1080 monitor. Even running at 1080 it will likely will still look better than an LCD 1080 monitor as it is an ips panel

Look at spending $300 atleast. you can get a 7950 like Blue said or better. You can run 1440p on a 7870 or 660ti but you will have to turn all your other settings down and not expect high frame rates.

This upgrade just got more expensive than I thought. And this is pre-mobo/proc upgrade

Like I said you can go cheaper if you don't want maxed settings and lower frame rates but if you want 1440p then you probably want the other too.

eta: what mobo/cpu are you running with now?

I don't keep up as much as I should with chips coming out but I know there is a intel release coming up to take the place of Ivy Bridge. Ivy Bridge chips have started to drop in price so not sure if I should jump on the deals or go with the latest tech. Input would be good.

That's a common question. Many such as LSUCoyote believe this won't be a big jump so there is no reason to wait for it. I say if you can find a good deal now just take it, there is always a latest and greatest thing you can be waiting on. Are you near a microcenter?

Nothing where extra horsepower would be needed. I do run VM's but nothing too burdensome.
