saw a theory that this game re-merges all the timelines... Sure does feel that way
that it's so far into the future that all points converged here regardless of what happened along the way.

fun fact:
equipping the "champion's armor" is what gives your enemies visible Hitpoints above their life meter

So I have to admit, I've never played a Zelda game. I actually got Wind Waker for the Wii U and played it a little bit but didn't get terribly far and then my son was born.
I have a Switch and Zelda being delivered tomorrow.
Am I totally screwed by having essentially zero knowledge in the Zelda lore/gameplay mechanics, or can a complete newb pick this up and understand what is going on?
I understand that the game is challenging and won't be as simple as picking up a Mario game for the first time, but I was curious if I'll get as much out of it as those who are extremely familiar with the series.
My hope is that the Switch makes previous iterations available on a virtual console at some point.

Nope. The game will be more difficult and probably in a way that makes it more enjoyable because things that are just Zelda convention and I just know to do something because it is zelda would for you feel like a satisfying discovery

Absolutely the later. It's actually more of a learning curb for long time Zelda players than new ones. I can't tell you the number of times I've fallen down forgetting that Link now has to be told to jump rather than auto-jumping like he did in every other 3D Zelda. The controls are very different from the earlier games. The game guides you but also allows you to be curious to test if certain things will work.

you'll be fine. enjoy!

Just noticed something: no Deku Babas in this game. I mean maybe I just haven't run across them yet, but they've been in every 3D Zelda game I can think of.

damn did yall know this?
basically, the more you kill of a certain enemy, the tougher they get. i.e. reds start getting replaced by blues

I pre-ordered for the Wii U and we're absolutely loving it. I actually don't mind the gamepad, I just wish the sheikah slate/inventory was available from the gamepad screen.
I have conquered just the Zora beast so far. My wife and I are each playing separate accounts, so I can't make as much progress immediately.

Game is fricking great, just got my seventh heart and beat the elephant before work. It's all I've been thinking about today.

Ancient arrows are so hard to come by. Having a ton of trouble with this death mountain one.

Ancient arrows are plentiful. Expensive but you should be able to afford a gaggle at any given moment.

Woah you guys are way ahead of me. I just got my first memory and the champions tunic from Impa.
Do I need to get the other memories? Just go looking for shrines to get more hearts? Or just start going after the divine beasts? I've got four hearts and extra stamina at this point. Feel like I need a few more heart before going after the beasts.

I have the master sword way earlier than I should
I've just explored and happened upon everything
2 divine beasts and a lot of shrines and recovered memories but I'm not anywhere close to the end

Yes. Do all of that.
You can get hints for the memories from some guy in towns and stables who paints. You don't do them all at once...just kind of knock em down as you go
Definitely do as many shrines as possible.
Just explore. Kill what looks Killable, blow up ore nodes to get gems.
There is a certain divine beast that is considered "first" but I'll let you find it on your own
