I have watched some video on the game but i can't get a feel for what it is exactly. Is it basically a sandbox shooter? Kinda like Arma Wasteland?

You drop into an island with 99 other people. As the game goes on the safe area you're allowed to be in shrinks. Last man standing, king of the hill style.
You can do solo queue, duo queue or squad up to 4 people.

I didn't think I would be into this game and I am having an absolute blast with it.
It is brutal and your chances of winning any given match are slim, but damn it is fun.

If you want a very basic idea of what it is download fortnite for free. Most here say pubg is better but playing fortnite will give you a basic idea of the genre

You have that very backwards
Fortnite Battle Royale is PUBG lite. They saw the success PUBG was having and basically copied it into their game.
Fortnite has hitscan weapons. You put your crosshair and the target and you hit it. PUBG has ballistics to worry about like bullet velocity and drop over distance.

Its more addicting than crack. Every single round is a different game, with different weapons, different map restrictions, never the same access to vehicles and transportation, and then you have to battle 99 other people. Its pretty much awesome.

Probably could enjoy it, but probably would never win a game. So guess it depends on what that person would prefer, winning or losing.
