Sports games have sucked since the ps2/Xbox

Y’all agree? For every sport, there would also be a ton of competition from different developers. In any given year, there could have been like 5 different baseball simulator titles for instance.

The last good madden to me was Madden 25. Ran on the same engine as NCAA 14 I think.

Yep been watching a lot of retrospective videos. I think it was the ignite engine that they both used. Madden 15 switched to frostbite

I’ve completely stopped buying them. The Show is the only one I even consider and I’m still kinda done with that

Yea the new sports engine that they switched to is fricking garbage.

Yea it was perfect. Running was so much more fluid. Running on the frostbite engine is like slipping around on ice.

Competition is a good thing.
That said, EA has tried bringing back NBA Live but practically no one bought it. The last couple iterations of live on PS4/Xbox One really weren't that bad.
Soccer at least has FIFA and PES (now E-Football). PES is actually pretty good some years despite lacking the licenses.
2K could've continued their football franchise at least a little bit farther, if they switched to college football, but I assume that those games just don't really sell well outside of EA's NCAA franchise. Same reason 2K gave up on college basketball and EA gave up on college baseball and basketball.

I still say Gamecube/Xbox generation had the smoothest playing football games.

When EA bought the NFL rights.

EA buying the NFL rights ruined football games.
2K games were badass, competition is a good thing.

NBA 2k has been pretty awful since Live died for those few years. I'm not sure if competition would have stopped that though as both EA and 2k are fully focused on using their games as a vehicle to push micro transactions. Everything else seems secondary to them now.
What I really can't understand how EA made that great new NBA Jam and then left it to wither on the vine with a single (kind of expensive) roster update that was only made for the PS3 and 360 versions.

I believe they had a college 2k or 2k1
Rohan Davey was the qb for LSU.
I don’t remember if it was better than ea was, just remember playing the shite out of it that year.

EA insisting on putting their sports games on the Frostbite engine will end up killing them. They’re very lucky the NFL doesn’t open up their licensing again.
ETA: the frostbite engine though pretty, is not good for sports games. Live though a bit clunky, had a solid foundation after Live 18. 19 was a mess. 2K plays so much better because it’s not trying to force a square peg into a round hole. It’s why Madden has been dog shite years. Whenever they get one thing right, it breaks something else. 2K is arse because they’ve been overtaken with greed. Not because the game at its core is bad, because it’s not. With the right sliders it’s actually really fun.

How exactly did it work before? Just thinking about college football, there were 3 titles issued in some years … EA, 2K and 989. Now just one license for EA. You would think that as much as madden gets shitted on, the nfl would allow other companies to buy the license.
