I've read lots of hot takes over the past few years of people predicting the ultimate death of E3 in the not too distant future.

In today's media/streaming age it's unnecessary to have a big co-ordinated event like that. Remember E3 started as a trade show before the internet was even a thing.

The individual big players can put on their own events on their own schedules, and they don't have to share the stage with their competitors.

This. All this.

It is easy to get a TON of publicity. There are 1000s of youtube / twitch streamers who will discuss any new game trailer. Have your press event on your own site, live stream it, and watch the internet explode with love / hate / meh.

No need to pay a pile of cash to share a stage at some event that doesn't actually boost sales.

E3 feels more like a tradition and a way to give fans a little live experience that only big time reps get.

Not really. It only recently opened to the public so not really a tradition.

I like E3. Sometimes I feel like I'm legitimately the only one but it's something video game related to look forward to in the otherwise dry summer months

It's fun to follow. The inevitible bitching about how boring the presentations are becomes a bit much, but good or bad, it's cool to hear about new games that will be out in 10 years.

Plus, I love Giant Bomb's coverage.

Looks better to have a big audience going wild over game trailers.

What about when you're Blizzard and you announce Diablo Immortal?

Is a switch positioned as a "powerful" system?

I was addressing fourthreeforty, a known nintendo homer, and his knock on the power of the PS4 Pro.

With the advent of the Internet and sites like Youtube, why are these trade shows like E3 so relevant still?

Just air the damn thing on the web from the comfort of your own studio.

All the demos they put on are scripted anyway.

Because you get far more eyeballs by being there. None of the Directs have the same numbers as E3 press conferences. That's why Nintendo went back to E3, they needed to have a presence there even if they weren't going to do a presser.

Not to mention it's now open to the public.

Personally, I'm very disappointed in Sony at the moment. Feel like they're just on a spree of making stupid decisions.

I agree, but if they have nothing to really show, do you think it's best to not show up at all or have a PC that gets crapped on by the world?

Rock and hard place, perhaps.
