Should I get a TV upgrade ahead of the next gen consoles?

My TV is about 5 years old, no 4K, HDMI 2, or anything like that. How much of a difference would getting an upgrade be in terms of enjoying the capabilities of Series X or PS5?

I would definitely get a 4K if you're buy a next-gen console. Hell, it was worth it for me for the PS4 Pro

Yes, you definitely should.
A 4k tv makes a big difference with the PS4 Pro and Xbox One X, so I imagine the Series X and PS5 will look even better. With that said, I wouldn't bother with an 8k tv yet.

Buy a 4K, but definitely don't even think about an 8K.

Don't just worry about 4k. You need a TV that has HDMI 2.1 but even that isn't enough. The new consoles will support low latency modes and variable refresh rates. You'll want to pay attention and make that what you buy is compatible with those new features. Very few if any TV's currently on the market support all of that, however the 2020 models that many of the major manufacturers have will support everything.

Worth it for HDR more than 4K IMO
But I would upgrade

LG's 2019 lineup supports all of that with HDMI 2.1, B9-C9-E9.
Samsung supports ALLM, and VRR/freesync on all models since 2018 but no HDMI 2.1 so it can't do 4K 120Hz.
Samsung's 2020 models also do not have HDMI 2.1 on anything but the 8K sets and they severely gimped the 4K models to push 8K sets this year so stay away from them.

I would def upgrade.I got a 4K TV and OneX last summer and it's a huge difference imo from 1080p. I bought a modestly priced Samsung series 7. I just use it for gaming. When I upgrade the my home theater tv I probably go with a Samsung Q series but you dont have to spend a lot of money to take advantage of 4K and HDR.

I just got a 4K TV and don't even have a 4K system and it looks fricking incredible. Would recommend for tv alone
