Should I drop everything and play Xenogears?

Found an old case of PS1 and PS2 games. Saw Forbidden Memories and Duelist of the Roses and was skull fricked by a metric ton of nostalgia.
Pulled out the ole original PS2 and memory card and was ready to pound Joeys arse for the Red eyes Black dragon and the Meteor B Dragon like it was 2002 all over again.
Just as I’m about to fist frick my wonky disc drive back into this console that was somehow still quieter than a PS4 trying to run Warzone my wife goes…
“How about you play the greatest game ever….”
And hands me over disc 1 of Xenogears.
Bold statement my friend. My wife has such a hard on for this game that I rarely see talked about or mentioned.
I do like a good j/rpg…just strange how I know nothing of the game or how people feel about it.
What’s the deal? Hype or nah?

It's a very good game. Top 10 rpg imo, but that's subjective. It's definitely worth a playthrough if you're a fan of the SNES/PS1 rpg era. Very interesting story and cast, battle system is unique enough to differentiate it from standard jrpg fare. I still find myself going back for a playthrough every so often. Give it a shot. The ending is a mind frick. The story is really where the game shines.

It's a great game. Mature story and interesting combat is what I remember. Been too long for me to give a bunch of specifics but it is worth playing IMO.

Combat is fun so far.
Managed to win Rock, Paper, scissors 5times in a row…fairly quick. Seemed to trigger the wife. She must have struggled with that part.
Story does seem quite interesting and def worth exploring. Feel like it’s going to end on a banger and have some great twist.

I'm glad you've gone on to play through it. I played decades ago, but never beat it. I was too young to play through many RPGs from SNES/PS1, so I am due to (re)play many of them.

My answer to everyone that asks this is yes, absolutely. My 1b favorite JRPG to 1a FF7 OG. There are some lulls here and there that drag on replays but for a first playthrough, disc 1 is a perfect game. Disc 2 is still great but you'll see what I mean when you finish.
Overall a 10/10 experience

Definitely play through to the end. The story is one of the best imo, the way it all comes together and wraps up. It's something else for sure.

Xenogears is deserving of all of the hype it gets. It’s one of the best JRPGs of its era, right up there with the original Final Fantasy VII
