here are 3 ways this could have happened.

1. Sony decided to throw money at Square for exclusivity.

2. Sony approached Square with the idea. Offered them money to help with producing for exclusivity.

3. Square approached Sony with wanting help to get the project off the ground. Sony gets exclusivity in the deal.

All 3 of these are plausible and happen. They are business partners.

Agreed, but things aren't that simple. There's a lot of room in 1 and 3 for different reasons to create the situation. Heck #2, could have been Sony's pure motivation to affect the Switch in Japan and nothing else.

We don't know, and money is money, etc. Sony has been cutthroat, even recently with Minecraft, so I'd err on the side of something shady/mean-spirited more than Square developing this, running out of funds and Sony saving the day or something altruistic like that.

Look at Shenmue 3, A game long awaited by fans is getting created because of the hugely successful kickstarter. But that is not the only reason, Sony's partnership is also the reason it has the funds to get made. Which is why Sony is getting an old Sega game as an exclusive.

True, but all you're doing is proving that Sony is preying on people's nostalgia then wrapping it up in exclusivity. Shenmue, though, couldn't be on a Sega platform today, so that's a different kind of situation.

You know they bought the exclusive to this. I hate the practice and everything it has done to the VG industry. Being on Vita means it could have hit everything maybe even tablets.

Adventures of Mana was remade and put on Vita. It obviously sold well enough to get this remake too. I've seen some next level butthurt from Switch owners today.

The insinuation that Sony would pay money for a game that won't crack 100k (in Japan) is hilarious to me.

frick everything about Sony!!! I'm not usually one to get salty about a remake or PS4 exclusive but this is HORRIBLE!!!! I played this ALL the time as a kid and have wanted it remade for years! Why all these companies jack off to Sony is beyond me.
The console itself horribly under performs on big budget games, yet gets all the big titles.

And I missed this too.

I don't know how you can have such a wrong, hot take.

Well at least you're self aware

And it's definitely coming to PC. Wouldn't be surprised if it gets ported around later on too. No excuse for a fan of Japanese games to skip a PS console. It's where all of the non-Nintendo ones are.

PS4 has outsold the XBox 1 so badly that Microsoft doesn't even publish their sales numbers anymore. Last time they did the PS4 had roughly doubled the XBone at 36 million to 18m. Ps4 is now up to 60m sold.

XBox also sold like complete shite in Japan. Why would a company make JRPGs for a system that couldn't even outsell the WiiU in Japan?

Interview with developer and some game play.

Looks pretty good. Not 40 dollar good, but good. I'll grab it on a steam sale.
